Travelling further afield than the CBD may see the need for a hire car. Ask for a street directory (map book) when collecting your vehicle, even if you have or are hiring a GPS. Driving in Perth is generally straightforward though at peak times in the morning and afternoon arterial roads and freeways can become congested. Whilst Perth public transport is easy to use and relatively cheap, the distances between popular tourist destinations does make using public transport quite time consuming. Fremantle, which is generally walkable, is easily reached from Perth by train, which takes about half an hour. Other popular destinations, such as the Swan Valley and Whiteman Park, are extremely difficult to reach using public transport.
Taxis are relatively expensive compared, for instance, to taxis fares in Asia, and are difficult to flag down outside of high-traffic areas such as the CBD and Perth Airport. They can be booked by telephone.
