The Flower drum isn't voted Melbourne's best restaurant year after year for nothing. This is one of the best Cantonese restaurants in Australia, and it could be rated higher than some in Shanghai or Hong Kong. (And so it should - it has been voted in the top 100 restaurants of the world for as long as anyone can remember (usually the top 50). And it is the ONLY chinese restaurant in that list. This restaurant is a real dining experience. 17 Market Lane, Tel.03/9662 3655
- Cicciolina
A St Kilda institution, Cicciolina's been dishing up the goods for more than a decade. Fantastic ambience, top-notch Italian-inspired bistro fare, with professional service and typically great Melbourne wine list. Plus sensational coffee and desserts. An added bonus is the intimate and moody 'Cich' back bar, where you can while away your time waiting for that sought-after table inside. After one or two cocktails, a glass of wine and a few tasty bar food morsels, you may elect to stay in one of the comfy booths instead. 130 Acland Street, St Kilda Tel. 03 9525 3333 (No Bookings!)
- Hardware Lane, Melbourne CBD
The whole lane is dedicated to outdoor dining. A diverse jumble of cuisines from Thai to Italian. Food is mostly fantastic and it is lively at lunch and romantic at dinner. On Friday nights they set up a jazz band. Well worth a lunch date if you are staying in Melbourne CBD. Melbournian's love their food and their coffee, you cant go far wrong along this lane.
