From Sydney Airport to the City

This information is relevant for travellers staying in the Central Business District (CBD), including Darling Harbour, Railway Square, Circular Quay, The Rocks or Pitt St area. 

 


 

Airport Train - 'AirportLink'

COST: $16.20 (International), $15.40 (Domestic) per single ticket

  • Approx $12 "gate access fee" surcharge payable when using a MyMulti transport pass
  • Discounts apply to Australian pensioners, Seniors card holders issued by the NSW government, NSW / ACT students, and children 15 years and under - currently a child's single ticket from International is $10.70 and $10.30 from Domestic

TRAVEL TIME:   11 mins to Central, 19 mins to Circular Quay (Domestic)
13 mins to Central, 21 mins to Circular Quay (International)

Taxi

APPROX COST (very expensive option but obviously the easiest): $45 to Central, $55 to Circular Quay 

  • Standard fare *1.5 with 5+ passengers, Standard fare *1.2 between 10pm and 6am

TRAVEL TIME: ~20 mins

NOTE: The quickest route to the CBD involves a $5.50 toll on the Eastern Distributor Motorway - by requesting your taxi driver to use an alternative route you will save some money. Taxis also incur a $3.50 airport toll when picking up passengers from the terminal. Indicative fares quoted above include both tolls.

Shuttle services

Shared shuttles into the city

Shared shuttle service into the city is usually available at the airport and arrangements should be made in advance.  While some hotels arrange may offer a shuttle service, other shuttle services collect passengers and drop off at various hotels in the city.    

COST: $12-14 ($20-24 return)

TRAVEL TIME: Up to an hour, depending on number passengers and drop offs at various hotels.

NOTE: Many travellers have had negative experiences, e.g. return tickets not being honoured and have advised to be wary when buying tickets and/or booking in advance. 

Private / shared shuttles to the suburbs and regional areas

Private shuttle services operate to / from the Airport from Sydney suburbs and regional areas.  Costs can be expensive for this door to door service.

There are many private shuttle services available servicing suburban Sydney and regional areas which you can easily locate over the internet.

Travellers should book this service in advance over the internet or phone.

NOTE: Sydney Airport states on their website that "...it is against the law for drivers or their agents to approach you or to solicit a fare from you.  All limousine and shuttle bus services must be pre-arranged." 

 


Alternative options 

Use of all options below included in all MyMulti transport passes.

1. Local train only (involves walking)

From T1 (International), walk 1.4km along the Cooks River to Wolli Creek station. City trains depart frequently on 2 separate lines - the journey will take 13 mins and costs $3.20.

From T2/T3 (domestic), walk 1.5km along Botany Road to Mascot station. City trains are relatively frequent, take 8 mins to reach Central Station and costs $3.20.

2. Local bus and train

The 400 bus departs from stops immediately outside T1 and T3. Buses come every 15-20 mins in each direction, and will take you to nearby suburban railway stations.  Tickets can be bought directly on the bus.  

Eastbound on the 400 (Destination 'Bondi Junction')
Alight at Mascot Station for a train to the city. Bus to the station will take 19mins (international - $3.30) or 5mins (domestic - $2). 
Train will take 8mins and cost $3.20.

Westbound on the 400 (Destination 'Rockdale'/'Burwood')
Alight at Rockdale Station for a train to the city. Bus to the station will take 12 mins (international - $2) or 26 mins (domestic - $3.30).
Train will take 17mins and cost $4.00.


NB: Buses in this direction will pass Banksia Railway Station. Do not get off here; trains are very infrequent and there are no lifts for luggage.
