Townsville & Magnetic Island
A great coastal town which is the gateway to Magnetic Island and the Great Barrier Reef. Townsville with a population of around 160 000 is a busy port city from where mineral, sugar and livestock exports depart. With Army and Air Force bases and a lively entertainment and dinning scene. Not tourist HQ like Cairns and the Gold Coast, still having a majority of architecturally significant, 19th century heritage listed buildings intact and in use.
