In order to rent a car in Portugal, one must pay attention to the following : - you must be at least 18 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Seatbelts are mandatory. Child seats are mandatory for children up to age 4.

Speed limits in Portugal are as follows: City 30mph/50kph Open Roads 55mph/88kph Highways 75mph/120kph - Traffic travels on the right. In traffic circles, vehicles inside the circle have the right of way. Drivers must yield to disembarking tram passengers. - Gas stations are open from 7am to 10pm and many stations located on the highway are open 24 hours. The unleaded gas price is approximately US$7 per gallon. - There is a toll highway, the "Auto-Estrada," that goes from Lisbon to Porto. Do slow down and take the ticket because without a ticket, there is a heavy fine. - "Blue zone" parking exists in many Portuguese towns. You can obtain a cardboard disc, free of charge, from either the police or local motor club offices.

Central Lisbon offers very little on-street parking. Internal flights are costly, many travel by boat, trains or car rental. Again, there is a hefty fine if you dont have a proper ticket for your travel.

Taxis in Lisbon are beige or black and green or all Black with an A near of the license plate. Green light on top means available; yellow or red means in service; no light means out of service. Fares normally start around 2-2.5 Euros plus luggage depends of your luggadge  and the distance is metred from then on. Note : Make sure you don't forget anything as it is so hard to find that taxi again and, if you do, it's very rare to get your things back. The "taxi voucher" sold by the Lisboa Tourism booth for 23 euros is not a good deal as most taxi fares into the city will be 15 euros but depends if its vans up to 8 passengers can cost up to 40€.

For Lisbon, there is the Metro which is fast, efficient and in the summer, keeps you cool ! If you stay for either 7 or 10 days, there are passes for these rather than the single ticket, which can be purchased in Metro stations; see the attendant and pay with cash if you have diffulty with the ATM selling tickets. There are also tourist trams and buses in Lisbon (note : buy tickets in advance, cheaper prices) or you can do it yourself, definitely a fun way to explore Lisbon.
