This public square in the historic center of Lisbon is located at the southeast end of Avenida da Liberdade, just next Rossio square.
This large square commemorates the country's liberation from 60 years of Spanish rule in 1640. The obelisk in the center of the square was inaugurated in 1886 and carries the names and dates of the battles fought during the Portuguese Restoration War, in 1640.
It is surrounded by 19th and early 20th century buildings such as the remarkable
Palácio Foz, a palace built between the 18th and 19th centuries and boasting magnificently decorated interiors, and the old
Éden Cinema (now a hotel), with a beautiful Art Deco façade dating from the 1930s, which was created by the architect
Cassiano Branco.
On the opposite side is the old
Condes Cinema, built in 1950 by architect
Raul Tojal in Modernist style. It now hosts the Hard Rock Cafe of Lisbon.
A few steps away is the popular Elevador da Gloria, a funicular that connects downtown to the Bairro Alto district in a short ride of 2 minutes.
