Wengen is an interesting place which has a long history but not a particularly detailed one.  This is because Wengen is a small and quiet town which has not been as affected by changes throughout the world as have other, larger locations.  The area was first mentioned in history at the end of the thirteenth century but not much was said about it.  In fact, it was not until the nineteenth century that anyone other than the people living in the area really began to know anything about Wengen.

Once it became known, though, people became greatly interested in the area.  By the middle of the nineteenth century, the train was running through the area and the first hotels were being built.  In 1910, the rail stayed open through the winter for the first time, bringing winter tourists to the area.  In the 1930’s, the now-famous Lauberhorn Run Ski Race ( http://www.myswitzerland.com/en/navpa... ) began to be hosted in the area, drawing international attention to Wengen for the first time.

In terms of recent history, the most well-known Wengen news was tragic news occurring in 1999.   At that time, there was an avalanche in the area which kiled two people.   Although no others have died, avalanches occurred again as recently as 2003.
