- There is no obligation to tip in Switzerland because service is included in restaurants, bars, hotels, etc. Rounding to the next Swiss franc for small amounts or giving a couple of Swiss francs when spending larger amounts in expensive restaurants is usual. Recently, some waiters have reportedly begun telling guests that service is not included in the menu prices. It is; do not bother to ask! Service has been included in the prices since the early 1970s.
- Talking loudly when using cell phones in restaurants, public transportation, queuing at the post office or bank, etc. is considered rude. Equally, talking loudly on trains - to other passengers in your group for example - is not appreciated!
- Questions about someone's private income and wealth are considered very rude. The Swiss people place a high priority on their privacy and value it greatly.
- Understatement and discretion are qualities that most Swiss people appreciate. On the other hand, glamour, show-off and exaggerated friendliness will raise eyebrows and be looked upon with suspicion.
