Driving is recommended for visitors who are interested in getting quickly from one main town to another in Tenerife. There is a free, efficient highway system which runs around the island (called autopista del sur and autopista del norte depending on the side of the island it is located). This highway reaches every main town except for the area between Icod de los Vinos and Adeje in the western part of Tenerife.
While driving is fast and easy on this highway, other roads need care, especially if crossing the north-west of the island, where roads follow steep curves round mountainsides. For internal travel, the public bus system is highly recommended. The buses are efficient, modern and inexpensive.
Hiring a car is highly recommended, as it offers the chance to go to towns and places that are not reachable by bus, or if the bus schedule for them is not suitable.
Walking is also a secret beauty for Tenerife . There are lots of walks available throughout the island, from very easy walkways by the beach that can be done in 30 minutes, to the climb of the Teide that needs at least a full day (if you are in very good shape). Some of the easy walks may be found at http://www.webtenerifeuk.co.uk/Portal....
Visitors to Santa Cruz may also like to try the new tram which carried its first passengers on 2nd June 2007 (Line 1 to La Laguna); Line 2 from Tincer to La Cuesta opened in 2009.
