Shopping in Las Palmas as well as anywhere in the Canary Islands is a somewhat relaxed activity. Typical store hours are not always consistent, but most are open six days a week (Monday through Saturday).
The average hour that stores open is nine in the morning, and they usually stay open until about one in the afternoon. They do close for a long “siesta” of about three hours, and then re-open at around four in the afternoon. Normally, after the afternoon “siesta,” stores re-open for a few more hours. On Saturdays, stores typically do not re-open after the siesta.
Most food stores, such as grocery stores, as well as larger department stores normally do not close for an afternoon siesta. All stores are closed on Sundays – although there are some exceptions if the stores are located in very touristy areas.
There are many different goods for sale in a wide variety of shops. The main streets in Las Palmas for shopping are filled with lots of little stores which offer unique items such as jewelry, clothing, and souvenirs.
For tourists, shopping is a great break from spending time in the sun. Most everyone reaches a point when they’ve had enough sun bathing and they develop a desire to spend some money in the many stores located within the city.
