What’s is it like to live in Paris (if you’re an American)? Most of the rental agencies in Paris are really geared to short- and intermediate-term rentals, and their services can be on the expensive side. Some of the more affordable areas to rent in Paris are the double-digit arrondissements (with the exception of the 16th and western 17th, which are quite expensive). The 12th is residential and less touristy than most.
It’s recommended to come first and stay in a neighborhood to “try it out.”
There are websites and magazines that can help. For example, FUSAC is a free magazine in English and is full of housing ads. Also, check out their web site for more details.
To avoid the city’s high prices, some American families choose to live in places outside of Paris such as Saint Mande, Levallois and Neuilly.
