Bristol has a regular taxi industry just like any other city. You can usually hail a taxi from anywhere in the city, but there are certain times of day when it will be harder to do so. During mid-day to early-evening it will be hardest to get a taxi for the obvious reason that this is the time of the abundance of traffic. Later on at night will also be tough as well. Sometimes you can call ahead and arrange a cab to pick you up from a destination. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that taxis in England are
extremely
expensive. The English pound is currently the most valuable currency in the world, and because of this, whether you are exchanging from dollars or euros, you will have to shell out a lot of cash. A short cab ride can end up costing you 10 pounds, which might not seem like much, but when you convert it you realize you just spend a whole lot more than you bargained for. These fares can often add up quite quickly, especially if you take a taxi from the airport to where ever it is you are staying. Sometimes you can agree to a price before the ride starts, but this is often dependant upon the driver. As for rental cars, these will also be a bit expensive, especially when you fill up the tank with gas. Again, you're paying in pounds, and the English use the metric system, which uses kilometers. This ends up costing you a fortune, so it might not be a great idea to rent a car. However, if you do, remember that the English drive on the left side of the road.
