Bristol is generally a safe community with a good reputation. The law enforcement in and around the city are well-prepared to deal with any situations that may arise, and they are always helpful if you need assistance. In the suburbs, the majority of people are inside and off the streets after midnight, and the only people who might be out on the streets after that time are tourists. This is different around Whiteladies Road in Clifton (large nightlife area) and around bars in the City centre. Some parts of Bristol are designated as "danger areas", and you do need to walk with caution: St Pauls, Southmead, Easton, Hengrove, Knowle West. As a traveler in a foreign nation, it is always best to be prepared for the unexpected. If you are going out at night, you should try to do so in a group, even if it's just to avoid getting lost on your own. If you are going by yourself, try to let people know where you are going. Leave your passport in the hotel safe, no matter where you go. If you do need help of any kind, just ask people around you or call the Bristol Police Department. They are more than willing to help.
