Balkan, The Greek Restaurant
A lovely Greek restaurant in downtown Banff. The Greek family that runs the Balkan has had the restaurant since the 1980's. The mom, Joanna, and children can always be found working the restaurant. In 2008 they completely renovated the space. It's now much more modern and has a beautiful rock wall spanning the length of the restaurant. There's also a lounge at the front of the restaurant with a view of Banff Avenue and the mountains.
Recommendations for food are the dips (the feta dip is a favorite), kalamari, and the roasted lamb. The wide variety of non-traditional items such as rabbit stew, and others, speak to the diversity of their menu. See menu and prices at this link Balkan menus. The cocktail menu has a wide variety of Greek-themed drinks and a large selection of Greek and international wines. A children's menu is also available and families are certainly welcome.
The owners also promote Greek Night as Banff's only live dinner show with bellydancing and plate smashing at no charge. Greek Nights are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Balkan is a great locally owned restaurant with reasonable prices. It's located in the historic "Cascade Dance Hall" building at 120 Banff Avenue.
