Sometimes it seems like every fun thing to do in Banff requires you to open your wallet. Here are a few suggestions for great activities that won’t cost a penny!
- Go for a show! One of the best FREE things you can do in Banff National Park is to take in one of the interpretive programs offered by Parks Canada. Check with the Information Centre in Banff or Lake Louise for a current schedule of campground theatre shows, fireside chats, and performances by Parks Canada's very own theatre troupe, Mountain WIT. This summer (2010), Mountain WIT is presenting a variety show in downtown Banff, free of charge, every Friday night in July and August at 7:30pm. It’s family-friendly, and it’s hilarious!
- Take a stroll. The pathway along the Bow River from the Banff Park Museum to the canoe docks is paved and flat. It’s a great easy walk for families with strollers and those with mobility issues. There are many benches along the way for pausing to enjoy the spectacular river views. Bonus: You are never more than 3 blocks from the nearest source of ice cream.
- Smell the roses. The Cascade Gardens are a charming oasis just steps from downtown Banff. Situated on the park administration grounds, the gardens have been delighting visitors since the 1930’s with locally quarried stone steps winding through vibrant displays of flowers and quiet gazebos. For the best blooms, visit the gardens between June and early September.
- Brave the waters. Johnson Lake is the favorite local “beach” of Banffites. This tiny spit of sand borders a cold, clear lake just 10 minutes’ drive from town. On a very hot day, you may feel brave enough for a dip in the icy waters! Very refreshing.
