“poor staff = awful getaway”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2011

My Spouse and I had wanted to go on a special Valentines Weekend getaway as we were also celebrating our anniversary. By all means we wanted this to be a romantic stay but we are not the type of people to just stay in the hotel all weekend. We opted for the Prestige Suite (King size bed, therapeutic bath, open bathroom, den with loveseat, fire place and private balcony) and the Saint-Valentin package (1 night accommodation in our Comfort Room(we upgraded), American breakfast, Saint-Valentin dinner, Bottle of bubbly in your room, Gift pack, Free rental of cross country skiing and snowshoeing, Service charge included). As we tried to purchase the best possible package for our weekend it was more of a disappointment. I had read the reviews before leaving so I knew what to expect .. Or so I thought.

Check -in
At check-in of course as mentioned the staff knows very little English. Lucky for me my spouse is French and so things went smoothly and we were able to check in earlier than expected. We were given our keys to the room and that was it. There was no explanation on dinner times or how our Valentine packaged worked or any other information regarding the room or chateau.

Our room
There was nothing that could go wrong with our room as we upgraded. It looks the same as shown in the pictures. Clean and spacious. The only downside that I found was that it wasn’t a real fireplace in the room, the Jacuzzi tub is very loud and the room was extremely cold. We had tried playing around with the heat but it seems that it would just blow out warm air and the room would never be cozy. I’ll blame this on the outdated heating system. As described in our package our room had a ``gift pack`` which had grapes, an apple, 3 chocolates and a individual bottle of red wine. And then of course our `bubbly` aka sparkling wine which was sitting in ice for our arrival.

Activities
After check in we continued up to the front desk as we saw the numerous activities posted on their website that were available nearby. When I asked the girl at the front desk for information on these activities she was no help at all. I was hoping to do at least 1 of the activities whether it be to rent a ski doo, dog sledding, or the zip lining. The girl had no information on any of these activities and just gave us a number to call which was out of service. I found this to be very poor customer service. As a member of the tourism industry the staff should be well informed of the nearby activities for those coming from out of town. This was a huge disappointment. We then asked about the snow shoeing that was available but was told that the paths available were being used by those on the ski-do and 4 wheelers. We opted not to go as we weren’t going to get in the way of the oncoming traffic.

Dinner
We had contacted the restaurant to ensure that we could have a later dinner at 8pm. There was no problem with that and the girl mentioned it was great that we had contacted them as it was a very busy weekend. As part of the package we were able to get a 3 course meal. At first we were extremely impressed by the food. We had gotten 2 starters ( the brie cheese and crackers and the smoked salmon) which I would highly recommend! We thought we were in for an amazing meal in which I would compare the The Courtyard Restaurant in our hometown Ottawa. However for the main course we were disappointed and both didn’t enjoy our meals at all. My spouse had gotten the eel and myself what was duck … or so the lady described. Both meals were awful with no flavour. Very bland and therefore a lot of salt was used. I was really looking forward to ordering the Buffalo steak with Johny Walker sauce`` as described on their website however the website menu isn’t updated every month like the actual menu. One upside to dinner was that the restaurant staff was amazing. I especially appreciated the effort of our server who tried to speak English with me as I tried to speak French with her. She was lovely and a great asset to this hotel. ( It was the girl with the red headband on sat the 12th , she deserves the recognition!).

Spa
When trying to book our room at Chateau Logue we had inquired about getting massages. We were told on the phone that they didn’t currently have the availability and wouldn’t be able to tell us if there were spots available that weekend or not. This seemed to be the answer of our whole stay! Im not sure if maybe the massage services were not being offered but we had asked the front desk numerous times about getting massages done and each time were told that the masseuse hadn’t given her availability yet. Finally the Sunday morning they told us they would call our room once they were able to get hold of her/him. We never got a call … surprise surprise. Therefore unfortunately we were unable to get any services done L

Location
As for the location of Maniwaki in the winter your highlight will be visiting the local Tim Horton’s or Jean Coutu. I had asked some ladies in the shops on where there would be a pool hall to have a drink and they suggested that we go to the strip club where they said there were Aboriginal dancers. Wasn’t what we had in mind. The poverty in this town is extremely evident as there literally is nothing to do (not even a movie theatre).

Overall I was extremely disappointed with my stay at Chateau Logue. The website hypes up the Chateau Logue to be a lot more than what it really has to offer. The front desk staff is uninformative and not willing to help make the stay any more enjoyable. There was so much I was looking forward to out of this weekend. Our income is currently limited and would have enjoyed staying elsewhere so much more for the price we paid. I really would not suggest this place to anybody especially with my experience and I really do hope they take my review into consideration for any future guests stay.

“magic little gem in the Gatineaus”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2011

My wife and I chose this hotel based on its geography and some of the reviews here. We were not dissapointed. We landed in Ottawa and drove for two hours through a terrible snow storm to get there. Much of the way I was thinking of abandoning this destination and returning to Ottawa for the weekend instead. I am very glad that I didn't. When you arrive at the hotel the first thing you see is this giant stone building: Sadly I don't think there are any rooms in it. I was happy to practice my highschool French and was able to check in without any problem. Our room was fairly basic and the carpet was badly faded - things that I am hapy to overlook for an experience. The bath/shower combo was a bit narrow but that was easily forgiven for the endless really hot water. Our room looked out over the river and when everything was covered in snow it was beautiful. We woke up the next day to the smell of a wood fire (we sleep with the windows open) as someone had lit the fire pit outside. Something about being by a river and smelling a campfire that starts the day off just right. We chose to eat our breakfasts and two dinners at the restaurant and were pleasantly surprised at each meal. The service was great and the food very good. They have an interesting wine list as well. We found ourselves drinking more Spanish wine than we ever had. The hot tub and pool were very nice as well. The pool has two ledges that run all the way around it so you can almost sit there just as you would in the hot tub. Thankfully there's a hottub so you don't have to. Neither my wife nor I sauna, but they have one so we could have. I rated this hotel 5 and excellent because it exceeded all our expectations. If you are looking for the Ritz or Four Seasons this isn't it. If you want to be looked after and stay in a nice place surrounded by great scenery then this is your place.

“Very basic rooms but clean”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2010

Except for the nice restaurant in the Chateau Logue part, the rest of the hotel is very basic. We found it expensive for the type of rooms they offer and the location. Since it was not that busy, we thought they would have lowered the price.
The room was clean, the bed was comfy but it looked like a basic motel room, not at all what we expected. Staff was not friendly, no greetings at check in, no good morning and thank you at check out. The pool area is nice, pool is warm but the spa was very dirty. Expensive for quality offered. Don't think I'll pay to go there again unless I really had no choice...

“comfortable and pleasant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2010

I attended a men's conference November 2010, and in preparation read other TripAdvisor reviews. I had, and heard of, no bad experiences as described in a couple of other reviews, but then I posed no special challenges for service.
The drive from Ottawa was pleasant once we cleared the downtown Ottawa-Gatineau traffic, and the views were great along the winding highway. The hotel is located in a town where the poverty is evident, and the hotel seemed to be the most modern building in the town. A large supermarket is located along Highway 105 at the turnoff to the hotel. The hotel is adjacent to a river and a golf course, with pleasant pathways at hand (free map at reception desk - ask for it), and the river views are great. The pool area is in the lower level just down from reception, and was easy to access. The hot tub was well used. The exercise room is dinky, although through careful mirror replacement it looks bright and spacious from the outside; inside, there is one treadmill, some free weights and a couple of other things.
All in all, a pleasant and relaxing place to visit for a reasonably short stay, and reasonably priced. I was there in the off-season, so the number of activities were naturally limited, but walking, bicycle rental, swimming, campfire and just chatting were enough to occupy a weekend. Given the undeveloped nature of the town, and the smallish size of the complex, those who aren't actively participating in a program or sports activity might go stir crazy after a couple of days.
There are smoking rooms in a separated area, too, but while the smell of tobacco was noticeable at the end of the second floor corridor right next to the entry door to those rooms, the odor was not present in our room.
The staff were friendly, spoke passable or better English, and were exceptionally attentive in the restaurant/bar refilling coffee cups etc. The food was buffet style for our conference, and was tasty and plentiful, with considerable variety. As a place to have an evening drink, the bar was okay. There was a limited selection of beer, and it closed at 10 but stayed open a bit later as people were there.
So, overall a pleasant experience, and I would happily go back.

“Very Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2010

My husband was going to Maniwaki on a conference from Ottawa and I decided to join him since we are always looking for little gems for weekends away. This was a great chance for us to scout out the area and hopefully enjoy a nice hotel. The trip started out on a great note. The drive from Ottawa to Maniwaki was beautiful. As we drove up to the hotel I was surprised, and wasn't sure we had the right location. The hotel is tucked in off the street behind the local library. Okay, no big deal. Check in goes okay. The next day I called the front desk looking for a local corner store and was very surprised to find that the lady did not speak English. Later that evening I called down again looking for an iron (yes that's right no irons in the rooms) and hoping there might be someone else on the desk. It was the same lady so I tried with everything I had to communicate that I wanted an iron. She said no, then finally got it, and said yes. They had one at the front desk. I asked her to please send it up to my room. It never arrived. Finally I went down to get it. Choosing not to attend the evening dinner for my husband and his colleagues I ordered a take-out Ceasars Honeyed Salad (with chicken from the bar. The lady who took my order was very charming. Because of the larger party of which my husband was a member of there would be a delay in getting the salad but she very sweetly offered to bring it to my room. The salad horrible. Overly sweet with lots of mozzarella cheese, and no parmesan at all. The pillows on the bed are horribly cheap lumps and the mattress cover keeps shifting because the sheets are too small for the king bed.
The only highlight for this trip so far has been the lady at the bar. She was new and showed amazing customer service skills. As I was speaking with her (in English) I couldn't help but think she would have been perfect for their front desk. As I type this I look forward to leaving here tomorrow morning.
I could not in good conscience recommend this hotel to anyone.
