“Nice view in B&B like hotel with nice owner”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Stayed 2 night in the Sunset hotel. Got a small discount so paid 45 dollars pr night including breakfast. The rooms are simple and so is the breakfast, but ok value for the price. We didn't find the rooms so clean, but the owner is really nice, firiendly and helpful and all in all we liked the stay. The hotel is a bit out of town, but during daytime you can easily do the 15-20min walk and in the evening it is very easy to get a taxi (which is 3 dollars each way). The breakfast doesn't start before 7:30 which is late for Costa Rica where a lot of trips starts at 6 am. However the owner is nice and will make breakfast untill 12:00 if you ask for it...so buy a couple of bananas if you are going on a early trip and have breakfast when you come back. You can't have lunch or dinner at the hotel so you either have to use one of the places nearby (5-10 min walk) or one in Santa Elena (15-20min walk).

Friendly hosts and terraces with a great sunset view. Ideally located to watch the rolling mist overhead. Better to have a car to access but not necessary.

“Aptly named”

The place lives up to its name, and one can easily sit out on the deck every night watching some amazing sunsets . Not to be outdone, the hosts are genuine, friendly, and happy to answer the same old questions that get asked over and over again with genuine concern for making your visit to the area pleasurable. And yes, it is true the owner draws really good maps.
Easy to find, great breakfast, and overall a really nice place to stay.

Room Tip: All have great views.

“Like staying with family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

This is a great little place and a terrific value. Vitalis, the owner, is very friendly. It really is like staying with family.

The trails on property (25 acres) are very good. Lots of birds, some wildlife, a stream, etc. A good, thick, tall rain forest.

We had a bit of a problem with small ants in the room, but not too bad. The beds were not in the best shape and the sheets were a bit worn.

The value here is amazing. Breakfast, a big room, trails, a great owner, amazing views. Located very close to Selvatura and the Santa Elena reserve.

“Fantastic location and a warm welcome”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

Sunset hotel is set on a hillside with far reaching views across the mountains to the Pacific coast. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens containing lime, avacado, fig and banana trees. It is close by many of the local attractions, but quiet and peaceful.

But the location is not the best thing about this hotel, nor the spacious, and spotlessly clean rooms. The best thing to recommend this hotel to you is the hospitality of Vitralis and Roberto the father and son team who run it. Always cheerful and helpful they have lived in Monteverde all their lives and have a wealth of information about the area and do everything to make sure your stay is enjoyable. Add to that the fluent Spanish, English and German spoken and the lovely breakfast with georgeous fresh bread and you will be glad you stayed.
