I had the pleasure of staying at the Banarama Dive Resort for the week of Jan23. I stayed in one of their ocean view villas and it was amazing. Travelling with 2 small children, the 2 bedroom villa with kitchen was the perfect amount of space. The front porch with the hammock was perfect place to hang out after the kids went to bed or sit and watch the sunset. I would describe the accommodations as rustic with a lot of character (cool sunken shower inside), and an outside shower with a place to rinse the sand off your feet. It’s not 5 star fancy, but it had everything we needed and felt harmonized with the surroundings.
The Thirsty Turtle restaurant had super friendly staff and a decent sized menu that had some North American basics such as hamburgers & wings, but also had plenty of local fare such as coconut shrimp and local fish. We found the portions quite generous and many times my wife and I would just split one dish. Everyday there was always a lunch, dinner & drink specials (I recommend the drink Monkey La La). They have their own smoker on site for chicken & pork and a wood oven for pizza. At breakfast there was always fresh fruit, cereal, and a different hot dish daily, such as French toast or the local baleadas, and the coffee was great. Every night there was a different theme at the Thirsty Turtle; live performers, karaoke, crab races and the not to be missed amazing fire dancers! Music could be heard from my villa at night but ended promptly at 10pm.
The Banarama Dive shop is second to none, the staff is very professional and accommodating. After my first day diving they were careful to assess and match me to divers of same skill level. I dove with Dorrine and Marco and they were great, they made it a truly exceptional experience. I would highly recommend doing a night dive as the bio-luminescent marine life was truly magical.
Overall we had a great experience, special thanks to Hulio the activities co-ordinator on site who helped us book daily trips and made sure we got the best deal, Carolina of the Thirsty Turtle who took special care of my family and myself, and Suyapa who gave me one of the best massages of my life. I look forward to going back!
