We went to this fantastic-once-in-a-lifetime-experience at Icehotel.
Im sad to say that Im diseappointed. This was not suited for a family of 5 with young kids.
I wished to go by dogsled from Airport. 1 dogsled takes 4 passengers and cost 5900 SEK.
So my family did need 2 sleds - not affordable :(.
Then we arrived at hotel. Here everything worked smoothly - nothing else to expect from a hotel of this kind...BUT...
We had our "ice-night" first, and arrived at midday.
As a start we had lunch at the hotel - this was a lucky draw. We looked at the airport resturant but didnt go for their expensive sausages.
The lunchbuffet was really nice and good value for kids.
Then we looked at the Icehotel for some time, had a walk around the township, did some shopping at Coop and then....??? yes what then???
Then we had a looong wait for our room, sitting in the reception with 3 tired kids.
At the lounge they had a little bit more comfortable sofas and 1 game of scrabble and 2 puzzels - thats it. (Lounge was closed part of the day too.)
At 6pm you get your room, but you can not really be there, as its icy cold. We spent a long time at the dinner resturant and then we waited again in the reception/lounge, with 3 bored kids...
And finally we went to bed.
We had some rushes to the toilet, but that worked ok and finally we woke up to the lingonberry drink in the morning.
Next day, we had to check out early from ice-part of the hotel, as usual, and wait again in the reception :( and after a while we got our warm room. Aaaah! at least somewhere to be and relax, walking around without boots and winter clothes.
As for other things to do, most things was for older kids, older than 12 (ice sculpturing) and older than 16 (snowmobile) so there was not much to do for a family with young kids.
And as you can read in other reviews, activities are expensive, everything is extremly expensive here.
I was also surprised by how little "other" things there is to do in the township.
Homested with resturant/Cafe, Same museum and Coop grocery shop.
As an example, Taxi from airport (15 minutes), Kiruna taxi 550 SEK, Icehotel taxi 750 SEK (150 SEK/pp).
So if you do some work by yourself, you can save a bit by not book at hotel.
At the same time, I dont see why taxi booked by Icehotel have to be more expensive.
We visited late in season, so it was not extremly cold, ie we spent a lot of time outdoor, instead of sitting in reception waiting.
I can not really recommend this for a family - sorry.
For a couple YES absolutley! And we spent some nice time in Icebar in the evening (without kids) I think it can be really romantic to sleep in an iceroom with your loved one.
