We spent two nights in Stryn Vanderhjem during our recent trip to Norway, and were really impressed.
The hostel's greatest strength is its staff...very friendly and helpful, and nothing is too much trouble. I didnt get the managers name, but he was excellent, prepared us dinner both nights at whatever time we wanted it, and on one night, did something that wasnt on the menu so that we could try a real Norwegian dish (bakalao). This food was some of the tastiest, and definitely the best value we had in Norway.
We had a private double room with bathroom, and although it was basic, as you would expect in a youth hostel, the fixtures and fittings were modern and the room was very clean. We had good views of the town and mountains from the room...wherein lies the only down side to this hostel..... the reason you can see so much is it is a long way up a steep, winding hill! If you have heavy bags, I would definitely recommend getting a taxi up there as the hostel dont currently offer a transport service (as far as I know)
Otherwise, very good experience. Definitely worth taking the bus from Styrn to see the Briksdaal glacier nearby - full of tourists but a beautiful 2 or 3km walk from the bus stop to the glacier itself.
