“fantasctic holiday - as always in Cuba ;-)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

We spent wonderful 10 days in this huge resort. It was low season and hotel wasn't full ;-) but it was connected with some inconvenience too: only 1 restaurant was opened for dinners and lunches; 2 restaurants for breakfasts and weekend lunches.
Accomodation in villas section was very comfortable & clean, was nice & friendly staff; food was very good (typical for Cuba, of course can not be compare to European standards), very nice restaurants a'la carte (fantastic live music in 'Gala Noche' restaurant, super lobster in Cuban restaurant, nice shrimps in Mediterranea restaurant).
Unfortunately there wasn't any atraction for kids during low season ;-( We've tried to visit Mini Club twice, but was closed every time.
But please do not forget to visit a wonderful place with massage nearby main beach.

In Guardalavaca is very nice sandy beach. You can go for a walk to nice, small restaurant located on the cliff on the western edge of the beach. Disadvantage was no hotel bar on the beach, so we had to go to pool bar for drinks or buy in local beach bar. Beach is open for everybody, so during staying in this hotel you have opportunity to meet local people, speak with them and get to know something about Cuba and their live (we were very happy about it because we couldn't do it during our holidays in Varadero). If you don't like this kind of company you can choose 2 other smaller beach in this hotel.

There was really fantacic holidays, and only some weather's disadvantages made us a little bit unhappy:
- daily rains (even in December, after rainy & hurricane season), normaly rains lasted about 30 minutes but once went on nearly 24 hours !!!
- day was too short ;-( sunset was at 4-5 p.m.

Room Tip: Villas section is the best choice -> big bedroom and living room + big bathroom + terrace / balco...

having read bad reviews of this hotel i didnt know what to expect , but having spent 2 weeks here i can honestly say it is great value for money. my partner 3 daughters and 2 grand daughters stayed in 3 villa rooms these are the best by far ,very spacious nice bathroom and balcony with ocean views. the only down point about the rooms was there was no coffee making facilities, which i need alot of in the morning; the pool at the villas was the quietest of them all i had the same lounger for 2 weeks, the bar here served drinks 24 hours but they are served in small plastic cups ,so order them in bulk or do waht others were doing and bring a large cup. we ended up using the large white jugs from our room at night time and got them filled with beer snd sat on the balcony.lol.there was different places to eat for breakfast but we used bennies as they made nice omellettes, for lunch we just had burgers, pasta or pizza at the 24 hour bar, for dinner we tried all the restaurants but the best by far was le espardo but be warned you have to book in advance to get a seat sometimes 3 days ahead. the weather was beautiful with a few light showers which soon passed, the kids club which was located at the pool side was free of charge and children aged 4 and up go from 9.30 till 4.30 every day and they are amused all day long ,taken on trips out ,horse riding and even taken for dinner by staff, the 2 girls here were an absolute godsend we miss them already lol.there is a market just up by reception and it is cheap and quirky for gifts and souveniers. all in all i would go back but maybe only for a week and id make sure i booked all my restaurants well in advance.we took a horse and carriage ride to the farming village and took gifts to the local children and their parents, makes you appreciate what weve got, toiletries and colouring books etc are always needed, its worth mentioning these people work for a mere 25 pesos a month so if you have any odl clothes or shoes take them along as they are always needed. the beach is absolutely beautiful .white sand ,music pedalos, kayaks all free there is a bar on the beach but you have to pay, just stock up on the way down and wander back to the free beer when thirsty .i would say food was 3 star but the rest of it 4,and dont believe what you read about the canadians we made friends with lots of them and they were great one man even gave my partner a t shirt with his fire staion slogan on as a momento, there were a few drunken people but come on there on holiday and you see them every weekend in your home town. not luxury but very nice indeed

Room Tip: if you book with thomas cook you get a free upgrade to villa rooms ask when you book

“Fabulous holiday and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

What makes this place is the beautiful setting, fabulous beach and coastline, but most of all very friendly staff and local people. The food was superb.... all locally grown vegetables and fruit and locally raised and cooked meat.

You will not get a better bargain anywhere. Also had a great side trip (the Taino Campania tour through sunwing). Very interesting informative trip and a superb meal at a local restaurant.

Tropical room was spartan yes at this price but quite functional and CLEAN. Katia our maid gave 5 star service. Lots of hot water & everything worked OK.

People who give this resort a thumbs down are obviously expecting something else.....

I particularly loved the evening entertainment (can you believe professionally done water ballet by locals) and talented musicians in our lobby every nite after supper. The local house band even serenated us at our meal at the buffet!!!

If you go to this place you will enjoy ... something for everyone...and please do tip or bring plenty of clothes, crayons, pencils toilettries - many people cannot afford these things which are very difficult to obtain in smaller places.

Room Tip: If you are concerned about evening noise festivities go for one of the villas. I found the Atlantico...

“Very nice place”

We spent 2 weeks in December and our overall experience was a great time. The staff were very nice and also very helpful the food was also very plentiful, there were also 5 A La Carts and you where not limited on how many times you went during you stay. I really recommend that you try the Beny Moore A La cart, if you are a lobster lover pay the 10 dollars. The entertainment was also very good....MMM Good. I would highly recommend this resort never had a dull moment!!!

“cuba on the cheap”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

I have just returned from the Club Amigo and all I can say is you get what what you pay for.The accommadation is in need of a complete makeover ,I understand that new management have taken over and they are doing the best they can.The food was suprisingly good for Cuba ,especially in the specialty restaurants. There is unlimited alcohol and unfortunately we had packs of drunken teenagers roaming around the hotel in the early hours after leaving the disco, often causing the local police to come in. The beach is very good ,the only down side is the stray dogs that are every where even in the restaurants. There was quite a lot of people get sick while I was there , some kind of virus.
On the positive side the staff of the hotel were very friendly and helpful ,the rooms were kept very clean.I left a little something from the dollar stores everyday for housekeeping and they were extremely grateful. I am always amazed at how little these people earn and stay so cheerful. I spent a lot of the time scuba diving , the dive center is just up the beach from the resort [Eagle Ray Dive Center] they will take you out every day if you are certified and the cost is very reasonable.
Like I said at the begining you get what you pay for,if you want a cheap vacation and you are not too worried about the quality of the accommadation, Club Amigo will do.

Room Tip: Stay away from the Garden rooms [the barracks] upgrade to villas .
