We stayed in Burn House for one night while walking St Cuthbert's Way . The previous night we had a terrible experience with our accommodation, so to arrive after a long day's walk to Don and Margaret's welcome was a big relief. It started with tea and home-made cake in the private sitting room, progressed to sharing our common interests in books and ended with the best breakfast on my 6 week visit the UK. Even after one night we felt we were leaving friends. The rooms were very comfortable, with extra touches such as a sprig of lavender on the fresh towels, a bowl of chocolates in each room and a little hand-made "walkers bag" on a hook with blister plasters, antiseptic cream and other things which was very thoughtful.
I understand they have won prizes for their breakfasts, and I can easily believe it. The bread was home-made, the eggs free range and the herbs from the garden. You ate in the kitchen, with Don standing at the stove so he started the eggs when you had finished your fruit, not before. He also did the toast and coffee at the right time, so everything was hot and fresh just as you wanted to eat. It was a truly wonderful experience.
