We recently stayed a couple of nights in South Melbourne as we needed to be in South Melbourne for a show.We had a two bedroom apartment which was clean and relatively spacious. The bathroom was extra large with washer/Dryer combo. The Kitchen was equipped with stainless steel appliances ie Microwave, Fridge,Dishwasher,Kettle, Toaster and heaps of plates, cuttlery, cups and mugs ( which any traveller will tell you is a necessity when travelling but in hotels you never get! that's what makes a serviced apartment so appealing.
The hotel is quiet even though there is a road running along side of it and a tram stop across the road to anywhere you want to go. One goes to St Kilda and the other way you can get a tram to Victoria Markets in the city. Get a tram to Elizabeth Street the another into the Markets which by the way are great!!
From the apartments it is a short 10 minute walk to South Melbourne Markets where there are fruit shops galore, Cake and bread shops and Butchers and just beyod the markets is a Safeway Supermarket which is very handy. You can browse the markets and pick up some great food in the little food court.
The only draw back is these apartments are only serviced ONCE a week which probably means you have to keep asking for fresh towels or wash your own which is different to any hotel I have ever stayed in as you get fresh towels ,soap ,tea bags, daily etc and you make your own bed so unlike a hotel or motel,DON"T expect to come home after a day on the town to find your bed made!! So I suppose you can call them partially serviced apartments!!
The Manager of these apartments is lovely and very helpful from the time I rang to ask her about locations and throughout our stay helping us with locations of places what trams to catch etc. This place is scrupulously clean and this is a testament to the manager.A few food tips stay away from this place that sells Spring Rolls and Dim Sims outside the markets they were horrible and at $2.80 for a thick batter covering large amounts of cabbage (no Meat) it was dreadful. There are many pubs in the area or food courts as I mentioned before.
Also if you are into feng Shui Items, there are lovely ones inside Victoria markets with Chinese sellers who know what they are talking about. If you are interested in feng shui there is a shop outside the markets on the main strip with a man who is exceptionally rude and you better off getting anything of this nature you need INSIDE the markets from stall holders. On the whole for all items the stall holders are friendly and knowledgable.
