I stayed at the Opium Den for a Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. It's on Hoddle St - a very very busy multi-lane highway - so the first night was quite noisy. The traffic was not so noticeable on the Friday and Saturday nights because the cabaret show was on in the bar downstairs, and it was far far louder. Every note, every word - all straight up through the floorboards.
Shared bathrooms and a very small room with a rickety old bed. (My husband has a bad back and wouldn't have been able to cope but on my own I'm a champion sleeper.) The owners are making a valiant effort to give the place some style but there's no getting away from the fact that it is a traditional working person's pub with a paint job. Not even a great location: no trams, close enough to the train station but a good 15 minute walk from the funky Smith St, more to the super cool Brunswick St.
Clean enough if you're not particularly fussy. Nice people.
On the up side, it was cheap. If money were a serious problem I could maybe stay there again ... or maybe not.
