This is a lovely B+B run by an English family - Amanda and Richard (and their young son) couldnt have been more helpful in preparing us for the holiday via email advice and phone calls. When we got there they made a special effort for us as we have a very young boy (under 2 years) and they lent us a superb child caddy so we could go walking in the mountains.
We paid for a transfer and Richard was ready waiting for us with a large and comfortable van/carrier (including child seat). The transfer only takes about 45 minutes - Lofer is in a great position as it feels much further away and 'in the mountains' than the travel time and transfer suggests (the flight was about an hour and twenty mins from Stansted - a bit early leaving at 0630 but worth it as you get a full day to get settled etc).
The breakfasts were lovely - selection of fresh cold meats, cheeses, cereal, breads, toast, preserves, tea, coffee as well as the offer of boiled eggs etc. Ideal for stocking up some calories before a long walk.
We had a ground floor apartment with large living diner, separate bedroom, and a bathroom. Shower was hot and powerful, and we also had sky tv. We made quite a bit of use of the kitchen which had a good fridge, kettle, toaster, m/wave and ceramic hob plus splenty of utensils. The apartment was absolutely spotless and had a nice patio door onto the rear garden with more chairs. A river runs by the back of the house behind the trees.
Amanda supplied us with a welcome pack including all of the local sights, food, timetables and so on. This included a walking/biking map of the mountain and surrounding area.
One of the biggest advantages was the summer card that was supplied free of charge - it had been pre completed by Amanda and was a cracking idea - it gave entry to a whole host of local attractions but we mainly used it for free access to the local pool and the cable car. It saved a fortune and the pool had to be seen to be believed - we have never seen anything as picture perrfect (we are from Doncaster...but we have travelled extensively).
Lofer town is beautiful and within easy reach of the other key areas like Zel am see and Salzburg City. We visited both and they were also superb (and a must see) but have to say we still preferred Lofer - spotless, lovely buildings, safe, relaxed and with enough restaurants and bars to try something different every day. Not however rowdy or like other out of season ski resorts.
The walking and biking trails are simply fantastic and the scenery just took our breath away - even standing in the front garden of the B+B we were surrounded by snow capped mountains and had 30 degeree heat for 5 out of 6 days. We may have been lucky but it made the place look like a painting - our two year old just went mad over the pool and I have to say Lofer is worth visiting for the views in the pool complex alone (I hope our pic does it justice).
We found Austrian people very polite, helpful and friendly. On one occasion an HGV just stopped at the side of a main road to let us cross (wouldnt happen on the A1....) and on another an elderly gentleman stopped on his pedal cycle and insisted my wife take a ten euro note for our child (we still dont really know why but we spent the next five days trying to bump back into him...).
Food was nice quality - didnt have a bad meal and ranged from traditional (sausage, snitzel etc) to thai curry, pizza and so on. All quite reasonable ie 8.50 euros for pizza, about 3.50 for 500 ml beer. What we found interesting was we seemed to pay the same in the villlage, up a mountain, or by a lake - not a lot of price hiking. Salzberg was also pretty decent and staff seemed appreciative of tips. I say this because this isnt our general experience in other countries (Italy, Spain) where the closer you get to a landmark/beach the more costly the food gets, quality declines and attitudes change.
So overall we were bowled over by our experience - so much so this is the first review I have ever written.
I feel compelled to recommend the town and Austria in general (or the bits we have been to) but specifically Haus Patricia B+B - it is a superb base to explore from - about a minute from the town aquare and a couple more to the lift and hills - and run professionally by a lovely family who really made the stay that bit more enjoyable. We will definitely return (maybe as soon as this year for winter if we can find the cash..) and I already have friends who have are planning to book.
On a final note it is the first time my wife has loved a place enough to consider moving there - and we own property in Spain.
Thanks again to Amanda and family for a fantastic hol !
