We recently stayed for a night at The Talbot. We were welcomed by the friendly owner, Stephen, who showed us to our rooms. I was surprised however that he hadn't mentioned, at the time of booking, that they were actually two flights of stairs up, on the top floor of the building. However, as I personally hadn't specifically asked about the location of the rooms I chose to overlook it. One room was small-adequate, the other extremely small, the décor very dated but, on the whole, both were okay except for the showers which had not been cleaned effectively. In one room there was no shower curtain. Also, on the landing area, we noticed electric sockets loose with exposed wires. The breakfast the following morning was good though it was clear that Stephen was struggling to cater for the nine people on his own. When we came to pay on our departure, he told us that neither credit or debit cards were accepted; again something that might have been mentioned either on the phone or at least on arrival to have given us chance to get cash. Overall, I'd say The Talbot was a little overpriced but it is very clear that the owner works extremely hard, and single handedly. An additional employee, for even just a couple of hours a day, would ensure a more effective breakfast service and help Stephen ensure the place was properly cleaned and allow a little more time to make the, what could be a beautiful building, a little more attractive and inviting. We chose not to stay the second night as planned.
