“Location, location & location (little else)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

an old refurbished hotel, with some limitations.
It is expensive for the kind of hotel, it is not luxury (we had a suite, upgraded from a Level Room), in fact it is quite standadrd for a beach hotel, except for the beach.
An enormous, huge beach, in which there is a great kitesurf and windsurf activities (hotel included) (in fact, world championships are celebrated), and all for you: lots of space (watch the photos).
There is little else to do, also there is nowhere to go, I had a rental car, and there is nothing near, no activities or restaurants, a major drawback really, depending on our expectations.
Relax and enjoy the beach: If that is what you want, and you can excuse a non-perfect hotel, I cannot think of a better alternative (and I know a lot).

Room Tip: all rooms have sea views, but better overloking the south of the beach

“Hotel nice looking but has cockroaches”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Had a room on the third floor, nice room until i saw a number of cockroaches. The landing also had roaches and outside the main bar. Its mainly full of german and russians who at first had never seen a person of colour by the looks of things as i was watched (actually stared at ) for the first 4 days. So i decided to give them a show as it seemed i was of great interest i purposely over dressed every night. Then on the 5th day i had many of them saying hello. The food was good and my son loved the kids club. The rep from thomas cook was rubbish as i hardly saw her and when i did and mentioned the roaches she said oh yes its because its hot (oh please). Wont be going back.

Room Tip: The higher up the better

“A place to unwind and relax”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

We go back and back to Melia Gorriones since years. It is one of the few places that our kids (now 21 and 18) do not have troubles spending a few days together with their parents!

We used to stay in separate buildings called "casitas del mar". Nice and spacious rooms, plenty of tranquillity. Nowadays we are accomodated in the main building, on a "Club Floor" named "The Level". Great rooms, very good service and free access to the "Level Lounge". I suppose, a meaningful choice for the ones who can afford it. Otherwise, "casitas del mar" should be their preferred choice.

There are a couple of pools. One heathed. The other one, probably the largest pool I have ever seen. Irregular shape, framed with palm trees. Truly impressive.

The biggest asset of the Melia Gorriones is however the beach (playa de Jandia). Kilometers and kilometers of white sand in a natural environment. Truly unique. You can walk miles and miles meeting just few peaple and almost no constructions. On one side the sea, on the other some very spectacular dunes. Tall and misterious. An very inspiring experience.

If you walk right by the beach, withing 30 minutes you get to "Risco del Paso", a pictoresque place which hosts one of the most reputed centre in Europe for windsurf and kyte surf. There you have a "chiringuito" where you can have an affordable meal in a totally relaxed environment.

It is a must having a car at hand. One cannot miss a visit to "Cofete", an unspoilt corner on the other side of the Island say, at no more than 45 minutes drive. One of the last paradise on earth! A car helps a lot, if you get bored by the buffet and you wish to get a meal in one of the restaurants in Morro Jable.

All in all, the hotel offers you good value for money. Service is friendly, the evening buffet is rich in quantity and acceptable in quality. The management is caring and attentive.

The very fortunate location, makes it however special to us and to you. Have little doubts about it.

Room Tip: Would reccomend Casitas del mar or "The Level" floors.

“Missing it Already”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

We've just returned from the hotel and are wishing we were still there.

The Hotel

The hotel was modernised about 6 years ago. Unfortunately, it’s now starting to look like it needs a bit more work. Don’t get me wrong, the public areas are good and we will definitely going back, but the rooms are starting to look a little dated. We had a Standard Sea-view room and in our case there was a badly cracked floor tile and part of the false ceiling was hanging down. The good points about the room were the large bed, bathroom, large balcony and daily cleaning service. We had a northern facing room (if any of you have seen the Reni Egli webcam, well that was basically our view). Next time I would make sure we get a South facing room as it’s the sunny side of the hotel and the views are even more spectacular.

The food was in large OK. Yes it was a bit repetitive and not always hot and getting a table on an evening was a particular problem as tables were cleaned up bit no new place settings were put back. However, once seated the drinks service was excellent and the staff friendly. The food in Snack bar was limited but the highlight was definitely the Doughnuts. Breakfast was probably the best meal with lots of chose for everyone.

Drinks were surprisingly good – a lot of branded drinks available on the AI list

There’s not much to do on an evening. The “Fun Pub” has nightly acts that start at around 9pm and last for an hour – some were good others dreadful. If you want to chill then the bar in the reception area is the place to be with its’ Balinese beds (A Charge is made for use of the beds. Approx €25)and massive stone settees. If you go AI then drinks are free until 11pm.

As we were there for Christmas and New Year the Hotel laid on extras like Santa Clause arriving on Christmas Day for the kids and a Firework display on New Year’s Eve.

WIFI is available, but only in the reception area and is quite expensive (I paid €35 for a week), but certainly cheaper than mobile data rates.

The pool area and gardens are well maintained and has others have mentioned, there is one heated pool. Unfortunately, it’s on the windy side of the Hotel and in December the wind can be quite blustery. The Southern side of the Hotel, in front of the Snack bar offers the best shelter from the wind. However, this does mean there is a lack of free sun beds.

The beach area around the hotel is absolutely stunning. Sotovento beach seems to go on forever. It’s so large that we felt that we were the only ones there. The main resort of Costa Calma is about 40 minutes walk along the beach - you do have to negotiate some rocky outcrops in several places. Look out for the Barbary Squirrels hiding in the rocks – they seem quite friendly, especially if you have food. Heading south, you could in theory end up in Jandia. We made as far as the Reni Egli 2 Centre where we would stop off for a coffee before the 2 mile walk back to the hotel.

One thing I will say is other people have mentioned issues with Mosquitoes - I personnally had no problems - started off spraying the anti mosi stuff on, but after a few days I stopped and I had no bites.

There is also a local bus that goes either South to Jandia or North to Costa Calma and beyond. A taxi cost us around €6 to Costa Calma.

Now for the biggest disappointment – Thomas Cook Airlines – What decade are their planes from? There was no in-flight entertainment what so ever. My seat on the plane going out had a broken arm rest and the seat pocket was hanging off. The food was typically disgusting and drinks were quite expensive – so much for duty free prices. No wonder they came 10th in a recent British Airline rating.

In summary, if you in to chilling, Kite Surfing, Windsurfing and Beaches this is the place for you. As I’ve mention before the Hotel does have some issues, but these are more than made up for by the positives and I’ll definitely be planning another holiday there.

Room Tip: South Facing - Offers the best views and also gets the Sun
