Well, this hotel is a mixed bag, as in bizzarre.
A group of us had been booked in to all the rooms for a night for a job we were doing. My wife and I were among the first to arrive, struck lucky and were allocated one of the ground floor posh bedrooms. Very comfortable they are, too. Lots of room, huge bathroom, great water pressure. No shelf in the bathroom for stuff but nowhere's perfect. Slightly surprised to note that there was the largest aircon unit I've ever seen poking out of the wall – and no radiators. Others arrived and were shown their rooms. All equally happy with them. Then we all trooped off for dinner with the client, coming back just before 11pm. That's when things became a bit strange.
You'd have thought that any hotel would welcome back with open arms more than 20 thirsty people ready for a nightcap or two after dinner. Not here. The bar was shut and wasn't going to be opened for anyone, even if all the guests, and I mean all, wanted to buy alcohol, soft drinks, mineral water, you name it. The staff would not be moved. After much pleading, one of them did pop into the kitchen and bring back my wife some powdered decaf, to allow us to make a coffee in our room. It tasted pretty yucky but it was at least warm and wet, which is more than anyone else got.
After a bit of chat we all ran out of steam and went to bed. The night was a cool early summer one, perfect for a good sleep. At 3am, we woke up. It was stiflingly hot. Got up to open a window. None would open. So that's what the aircon was for!
Next morning we all had to be up early. I trooped into the breakfast room at 7.45 to be greeted with, "You're too early! Breakfast starts at eight!" The next person was told, "Chef doesn't arrive until eight! You're early!” OK, we’d got the message. My wife wanted just fruit. If tinned grapefruit counts, her wish was granted, because there was nothing else on the fruit front. Another colleague arrived. He’d stayed here before and had brought an M&S fruit salad with him. I had scrambled eggs and bacon (post 8am, of course), which were fine. Then we all started talking again. Everyone had had a disturbed night’s sleep. All had been woken by the heat. All on the ground floor found their windows didn’t open and used their aircon. All on the first floor found they had to fling their windows open – and discovered that outside was distinctly chilly. Well, Street is close to Glastonbury. Perhaps the hotel is on a thermal ley line. Who knows?
A few minutes later, we all checked out and a last strange thing happened. The staff refused to bill us for pre-dinner drinks. I assume that the client picked up the tab but it could just be an old Mullions tradition.
Would I stay here again? I honestly have no idea. It’s certainly quiet, comfortable and clean. If I do, I’ll put the aircon on before I go to bed and bring a bottle of something chilled and white with me, along with fruit for breakfast, which I can eat before 8am.
