Well placed in the centre of Aylsham. I would probably describe it more as a pub focusing on food with rooms.
It has to be the smallest room we have ever stayed in (about 9 x 12) with massive furniture, making it feel quite claustrophobic. Beautifully clean with nice shower room. They do not supply any toiletries, so make sure to bring your own!
The restaurant/bar was very busy with local drinkers filling the central space, and tables around the edge of the room and in adjacent room. Probably not the best place for an intimate quiet dinner. There was nowhere to sit before dinner so the crowd standing in the centre of the room appeared to get in the way of the staff.
The Manager and his staff were exceedingly friendly and efficient, and the food was good, fresh, hot and arrived surprisingly quickly considering how busy they were. The portions were also exceedingly generous. The large steaks are definitely not for the small appetite.
Breakfast is not included in the room price, which is made clear on their website. To be honest, I would be surprised if anyone could manage the full breakfast after dinner the night before, so the half option was very welcome.
In summary; some very good bits (food, wine, service) and not so good (room size, lack of toiletries, bar area). All in all a fair place to stay for a night, but probably not longer.
Note to management - could you please go round the place with a can of oil and attend to ALL the SQUEAKY doors and rattling kitchen extractor - Are we the only ones who are driven crazy by squeaky hinges?
