“Friendly, Quiet, and Great Food!”

We were greeted with a toasty warm wood stove going, and Els right away brought out some tea and cookies, which we enjoyed by the fire while reading their many books about Ireland and the local area. The lodge is very tastefully decorated, without all of that stuffy Victorian pink lace and doily decoration you can typically find in a B&B. Upon reading the other reviews, I have to agree that the breakfast was amazing. Our first morning we had Dutch pancakes with rashers and maple syrup. I'm still dreaming of it. Second morning we had the baked eggs, which were also fantastic. And the coffee was strong and delicious, a serious concern of ours in a country that drinks a lot of tea.

Peter is an incredibly interesting man and he would come out in the morning to talk to us while we waited for breakfast. I could have sat there all day listening to him (and eating Els's pancakes). He recommended several things for us to see and do, while giving us mini history lessons in everything from the Titanic to why they drive on the left side of the road. I wish we made some time for an archery lesson with him.

The whole place is very clean and everything has been thought of in an eco-conscious way. Yes, the bed is creaky as are the floor boards. We got used to it after our first night. Once you convince yourself it's all part of the charm, you start to roll with it. The surrounding countryside is totally quiet and peaceful. A squeaky bed is a very small price to pay for a fantastic stay in a beautiful location with great hosts and insanely delicious breakfasts. I'd go back in a heartbeat. Make sure you get a chance to feed the hens some grapes!

Hi _ my sincere thanks for such a great review. Oops the creaky bed again. I'll try get that sorted on the morrow.
You'll definitely will have to come back and check out the archery - I a set of medieval arrows and an English war(long) bow - since you were so interested in history it was remiss of me not to show it. One of the arrows is a 'broadhead' armour-piercing - the genuine article. Put shivers up your spine to see it up close.
I'm delighted that you were able to brush over the squeaks - but I promise to do better. Next time we'll have a fiddle lesson.

“Not entirely what we expected after reading previous reviews”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

I booked here for our family of five following the good reviews on tripadvisor in two rooms at the end of August beginning of September for three nights.

Good Points
Peter the guest house owner was very friendly, informative and helpful ie: spending time with our son showing him how to improve his guitar playing.
The rooms and communal areas were very clean and tidy.
The fantastic breakfast, probably the best we've ever eaten.
Ideal location to explore the local area.

What we didn't expect was:
We found Els (Peter's partner) to be quite 'sharp' with us on occasions. She explained she was very tired due to the fact that she had been working extremely hard that summer and was finding the whole bed & breakfast business difficult which all in all put a bit of an 'edge' on our stay.
We felt the electrics/wiring and some of the DIY were not entirely up to scratch. For example our children wanted to watch the TV in their room but couldn't get it to work, so when my husband went to check the tv he found the wiring to the socket wasn't correct and when he moved it slightly it started to spark and as a result all the electrics in the house went out!
Our double bed was comfortable but extremely creaky so we avoided moving too much so as not to wake each other.
The toilets are flushed with rain water so can be slow to fill.

Peter and Els are extremely eco conscience so this must be considered when making a booking.

Hello and thanks for taking the time to write the review. I'm truly sorry that Els wasn't in good form when you arrived. We had had an incredibly busy couple of months and as Els need a new hip and has other problems - well she can sometimes get a bit down. Judging by the other reviews she does manage quite well mostly and our apologies that she wan't at her normal cheery self during your stay.
As to the electrics - alas a local electrician let us down half way through the job and that one socket was a problem - fixed now, you'll be happy to hear.
As to the water flow rate - it takes 4 min 15 secs with the rainwater-fed WC and 2.55 with regular supply. A fair trade off I feel for saving tons of water each month.
As to the bed ! I've asked people since and there hasn't been a problem however when we turn the mattresses next I'll check the laths to see if there's something amiss.
Happy your son enjoyed the lesson and that you all enjoyed the music session and time with the locals. I'm especially glad you mentioned the breakfast - Els really works hard to get that right, in spite of poor health.
My regards to all in the family.
Peter

“Lovely would definately recommend Baked Eggs for breakfast!”

I stayed at the Lodge as we were attending a wedding locally, our room was lovely clean and bright there was everything you need hairdryer, kettle, books, local guides etc right down to a chocolate snack biscuit on a tray and a carafe of water, we were asked what we would like for breakfast and as a I don't eat meat I have gotten used to beans on toast with a tomato thrown in but as Els and Peter are vegetarians I received a wonderful plate of fresh fruit garnished with flowers, followed by the house special of baked eggs delicious! fresh orange, breads, cereals you name it the choices. I work in Tourism and I was very impressed with the hospitality and service received, B&B prices were very reasonable.

Many thanks for taking time and effort to write a review. I find it especially heartening that you work in tourism and remain so positive about Glenribbeen - That's really great to be judged by a peer - and brill that we 'scored well'.

As for the breakfast - that really is where we believe we can shine. I'm always delighted when Els gets praised for her work as it is different and we believe better than any we've ever had. We trully believe that B&B's must see the breakfast as something that guests look forward to and remember fondly.
Again my thanks.
Peter

“Wonderful hospitality in a beautiful place. Top notch!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

Peter and Els are wonderful people and right from the moment we met them, I knew we made the right choice of a place in Lismore. Their home is in a beautiful setting a short distance from the town of Lismore and quite an experience with gardens, hens, two wonderfully friendly dogs and within an easy walk to a river where the salmon fishers are busy. The house itself has a wonderfully large and comfortable dining/sitting area where breakfast is served and where we often found ourselves spending time chatting with Peter and/or Els and enjoying a cup of tea or coffee after a day of sightseeing. We learned A LOT of history about Ireland and Peter let us read books from his extensive library...one of which we borrowed and will send back. I had thought the breakfasts were great up to this point on our trip, but Peter and Els really go over the top with beautiful presentation and extraordinary and delicious food. I guarantee that you will not get a better breakfast in Ireland!!! Peter and Els are very approachable and helpful. A couple of evenings, we picked up some meat to BBQ and Peter set up the grill and provided the dishes, etc... We never felt rushed in our time with them as they always seemed to have time for whatever need or question we had. The room was comfortable and clean and had a TV/DVD combo in it. I loved the snacks and waters! Overall a great experience and highly recommended!!!

Hi - Thanks for taking the time to write. I'm again very happy you highlighted the breakfasts - Els will be thrilled. She feels she's the 'below the stairs' and doesn't get the limelight. But of course she's the power behind the throne.
Happy too that you mentioned the BBQ - so few people make use of it though we offer it and the adobe oven to guests. We don't eat any meat and rarely eat fish so it seems a shame that it's not used more. It certainly helps keep the costs down - staying 2 nights at €30pps per night and BBQ'ing is cheap by any standards - + we offer the bikes. canoe etc and the lessons. Won't get that in a hotel :-)

Thanks again,
Peter

Thanks Peter and Els for a most memorable stay at your wonderful home. I only wish we could have stayed longer. Peter, I really enjoyed all your insights about the local history and of course giving us a concert of your family's music... Next time, I want to hear YOU play! Els, your wonderful cooking spoiled us. It was all downhill after we left... Thanks again and if your ever in Colorado... look me up. Thanks again and hope to reserve my room (queensize bed) next year if not sooner.
Peace and shamrocks,
Brian

Hi Thanks for writing. Hope to see you again - soon.
This time I'll take you to the Titanic Museum in Cobh where my grandfather's tools and photo will be on display. We're arranging things next week to have all ready for the grand opening.

Wonder what theme you'll use for your photos next visit??
Try arrange to be here on Thursday nights - that's the best night for music session.
