The biggest testimony we can give Wheeldon Trees is that this was our fifth stay in the cottages! Despite that this is the first time we have stayed for a full week, previously only having long weekends.
This was our first stay in Mycock Cottage but we knew what to expect from the property as they are all similar & all perfect. It was plenty big enough for us both & our 5 year old daughter (& Gordon setter Rudy) & the tasteful Xmas decorations gave it a lovely festive feel, nice little extras like a christmas cake & a bottle of prosecco were an extra new year bonus too.
I have previously reviewed Wheeldon Trees & can only echo those feelings, it's a great setting, the cottages are beautifully furnished & equipped & Martin & Deborah are the perfect hosts. I genuinely think they have thought of everything, the long room is packed full of toys & games for all ages, the store has full laundry facilities, stock of prepared meals & other useful kitchen items. It also has a lovely Eco feel as recycling almost everything is encouraged & so easy to do.
As you might expect in the Peak District the weather in late December/early January is not always glorious but we found plenty to do locally despite it being New Year & we were so glad we had the full week. Pantomime at the opera house was a festive must, Poole's Cavern was a fun day, nice wander at Chatsworth House & plenty of walks locally round the cottage, the bookshop down the road was great for a stock up of reading material too. We must also recommend a meal at the Royal Oak, we've been every time we've stayed at Wheeldon & always been impressed. The menu is vast, the food lovely & I defy anyone to get through 3 courses! we've never made it to dessert yet!
Wheeldon Trees was the perfect treat after a hectic build up to Christmas & we left feeling fully rested, recuperated & ready for 2012, we just need to work out when we are returning for visit no.6
