We made the Porch House our home for a week and stayed in the upstairs Clun self-catering apartment. The owners, John & Gill, made us feel more than welcome. Bishop's Castle is an old town and may not be as spashy as nearby Shrewsbury. In many ways, it feels like a step back in time to old rural England. Even better, it provides an excellent base for exploring the many places of interest in the surrounding area. In the week we were here, we visited Shrewsbury, Ledbury, Mitchell's Fold, Attingham Park mansion, Wroxeter Roman ruins, Ironbridge Gorge, Helen's Manor at Much Marcle, Eastnor Castle, Stokesay Castle, Ludlow Castle, Clun Castle, and Much Wenlock. Who could ask for more -- except more time? The Clun apartment has been fully refurbished with all modern conveniences, including a wood burning stove. The kitchen was fully equipped and clean. WiFi reception was great and there's ample parking in the back. The shower is small, but the pressure is good and the water is hot. We found the bed and pillows very comfortable. There are two flat screen TVs – one in the bedroom and one in the living room – with Freeview channels. And a DVD player too. There's a great view of the rolling Shropshire hills out of the side window. People are very friendly in Bishop's Castle and locals far outnumber tourists, at least when festivals are not on the calendar. The Ganges Indian food restaurant up the the street is very good and reasonably priced. There's a Coop just down the street that opens at 7am. We recommend the Tiger baguette. The building dates from 1564 with many original parts. John will happily give you a complete tour. The size and shape of the Clun apartment is a little quirky, but that's half the fun. There's live music at the pub across the street once or twice a week, but it stops at 11pm so it's not really a bother. The High Street itself is pretty quiet. The Porch House is a wonderful old Elizabethan building with lots of history and provides great value. We recommend it highly for a country getaway.
