“Barefoot chic at its best”

We are just back from 5 days at Hotelito. This place has just reopened after a complete re-build and they have done an amazing job- If you want a luxury back to nature, relaxed, barefoot vacation this is the one. No electricity, no air-con, no cell phone reception, no motorised waterspouts- this place is not for everyone but this is the resort I have been looking for the past 5 years! Its along the lines of Kiwayu in Kenya, but with Mexican hospitality.

The rooms are fantastic- huge round thatched structures, ours was on the edge of the lagoon with a large balcony. No glass, just wooden doors which we kept opened all day/night. There was an 8ft round bed in the middle of the room, a hugh marble bathtub for 2 and the most fantastic outdoor double shower I have ever seen.

The team were great- there are a few teething problems with the hotel, not surprising given that it reopened only 3 months ago, but they have taken note of what we thought needed changing and have assured us that these changes are on the way; the food menu is going to include more Mexican dishes and will change more often; a few activities such as windsurfing and sailing and an outdoor gym are planned; and some brighter candles are being introduced to the restaurant so that you can see what you are eating at night!

We will be back, was one of the most relaxing few days we have ever had. A truly special place and well worth the journey.

Room Tip: Choose a round bed and a palafita on the lagoon. The rooms on the beach are going to be very noisy a...

“Hotelito Desconocido was the best experience ever!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2009

We are from Ibiza, Spain, and went to Hotelito Desconocido because our travel advisor told us amazing things about this hotel, that is a destination by itself. We never thought that could be a place like Hotelito Desconocido, an authentic green luxury, with exterior bamboo shower in room, king bed and walls furnishe with Mexican art & crafts. It was a dream. Service was incredible, very warm. The biologiste take us to see the giant turtles at 23h and every evening at 19h he ask guest for help in baby turtles liberation. We went to the birdwatching tour too, at 7 in the morning, is quite early, lol, but you can't miss this tour. They told us they went to close for an integral renovation from may 2009 to april 2010, the owners want to become the hotel an Spa Destination, with Thalassotherapy, Temascal, natural cosmetics, etc. They are going to rebuilt the whole resort but maintaining the concept. My wife is telling me to come back to Hotelito Desconocido in May 2010, for a week in order to know all the new surprises. We are hoteliers in Spain and we know very well the tourism industry, Hotelito Desconocido is now our preferred destination all over the world. If you are lookinf for new experiences, you have to go there!!! ah, I have forgotten tell you about food, let me say that food in Hotelito Desconocido is more than great, better than our grandma's one!!!

“It was HOT HOT HOT”

I went to this hotel in August for my sisters wedding and i think there should be a couple things people should know before spending the money. We first went on the off season so it was extremely hot! One day it reached 103 and that would not be a big deal if there was air conditioning but its all fans. So i would not recommend it if you have elderly and very young children with you. Another was the trip down we landed in Guadalajara and it took a good 2 and a half to 3 hours drive to get there and the ride was very hilly which caused a couple people motion sickness. Some of the people do not speak any English so my high school Spanish classes helped me out to translate for some of my family. No matter where your hut is there is walking involved but they gladly picked up people for the wedding such as elders via gold cart. There is no electricity so come night time its all candle lit with some lanterns, which was really no problem i just thought id give you everything that was slightly different. There is a special basket for your toilet paper because it can not be flushed. Alcohol drinks were slightly overpriced i had a orange juice and vodka which set me back a good 15 dollars per drink. With that being said i hope it gives you an idea if the hotel will be right for you. There was many things great about the Hotel. There was breath taking views in every direction, probably one of the most beautiful places iv stayed at. The food and drink is so fresh tasting and delicious and mostly grown from their gardens. the pool was my favorite on the super hot days where you can lay on on big bean bag like pillows. I got a massage and it was one of the best i have had, sometimes your taking a chance with those. They also have expeditions if you would like to see the turtle eggs, my 8 year old brother and dad went on the trip and they said it was the coolest thing. We also enjoyed a couple bonfires on the beach. The service was great, everyone was super nice and did anything to make your stay great. Delilah the manager, was the most nicest and helpful person possible. Overall it was a great experience just do not book in August also its a very romantic place, good for couples.

  • Liked — Breath taking views, fresh food, pool, spa, turtle expedition

“Both primitive and upscale”

We stayed here in August for a wedding that was held on the beach. The weather was hot hot hot and humid. One of the wedding guests had actually a heatstroke from standing in the sun while watching the ceremony. We were dismayed, but not surprised!

Even though this sounds tough, the good news is that the pool is a perfect cooling off temperature (in August but maybe too cold the rest of the year?), there are hammocks in the shade next to the pool and they make fresh ceviche and guacamole for you, served poolside. The heat was difficult, but we knew going in that it would be hot, so we found ways to deal with it.

The rooms (actually little cabins) on the beach side were open air and looked right out at the ocean. Truly beautiful. To get back to the mainland, you must be rowed across a small estuary by one of the staff. There is always someone waiting to do this, even at 3am.

We stayed on the estuary/mainland side, mainly because I needed some electricity for my camera gear that I brought. We stayed in the Sandia (watermelon) room. All rooms have theme names and matching decor. For example, our room was pink with red watermelons painted on the walls by local folk artists. I peeked into most of the rooms and they were a blend of naive art, vibrant color and Mexican antiques.

Because we stayed on the mainland side, we didn't benefit as much from the ocean breezes. If you need the breezes and are on the mainland side, I recommend asking for the Pajaro, La Pera or the Pinito (Pine tree) rooms. We had a ceiling fan...but at night, the staff (as a courtesy) sets up your bed with a big mosquito net which essentially keeps the ceiling fan air from reaching you. I eventually figured out what times the mosquitos were hanging around, and waited until they went away, then opened up the mosquito net. I am not clausterophobic, but being inside the net was just a tad too cozy for me.

At night the staff also lights all the candles in your room for you We got to stargaze...the stars are amazing. We saw a mama sea turtle lay eggs, saw every kind of bird and lizard and enjoyed pretty good food (not sensational, but very well prepared and fresh) at the Cantarito (the club house). We played billiards and read. We fished a little. We wanted to kayak, but it was a bit breezy when we were there. So...nature at every level, but also creature comforts. A restful pace with an attentive staff.

We were also able to check our email (with a very sloooow connection) at the check-in bungalow. I only did this because it was pouring rain one day and I had a little client business to take care of. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered.

We would've stayed one more day if we could have and yet there was a wedding guest who traveled back to Puerto Vallarta with us who had only been there 2 days and was going crazy because he didn't have tv or his laptop. He totally couldn't stand the place. It really depends on what you like to do on vacation. We're not all-inclusive resort kinds of people, but we definitely didn't mind being pampered at this beautiful location.

  • Liked — Beautiful atmosphere and pampering by the staff.
  • Disliked — Mosquitos, limited food choices, remoteness.

“The best of times, the worst of times”

This is a unique property. Gorgeous setting. Very attententive staff. Outstanding food (much of the greens from their own gardens). A wonderful atmosphere, especially before dinner in the Common Room. In particular, the staff paid great attention to our two-year-old, washing sippy-cups, moving her chair over to the Ocean-side each day for lunch, and installing a screen around the rustic but unsafe "branch" balusters between our balcony and the Lagoon.

Now, here's what we didn't know: You can't swim in the Ocean. (A big deal for us) Massive crashing waves and high winds the whole time. Permanent Red-Flag. Unfortunately, the unheated pool was too small and too cold for most guests to swim in as well. Our Lagoon-side room was so cold (rattan shutters instead of glass, and a huge, open gap between the wall and the Palapa roof) that I woke up in the middle of each night with my teeth chattering. In the morning (circa 7am) you could see your breath in the room. More like camping than a 5-star resort. Had we known, we would have brought long-underwear or thermal pyjamas.

So, on balance, it was still a good expereince, but it would have been much better if we had known ahead of time what we were getting into, and come better-prepared.

  • Liked — Physical Setting
  • Disliked — Can't sim in Ocean' Room freezing cold
