We stayed here in August for a wedding that was held on the beach. The weather was hot hot hot and humid. One of the wedding guests had actually a heatstroke from standing in the sun while watching the ceremony. We were dismayed, but not surprised!
Even though this sounds tough, the good news is that the pool is a perfect cooling off temperature (in August but maybe too cold the rest of the year?), there are hammocks in the shade next to the pool and they make fresh ceviche and guacamole for you, served poolside. The heat was difficult, but we knew going in that it would be hot, so we found ways to deal with it.
The rooms (actually little cabins) on the beach side were open air and looked right out at the ocean. Truly beautiful. To get back to the mainland, you must be rowed across a small estuary by one of the staff. There is always someone waiting to do this, even at 3am.
We stayed on the estuary/mainland side, mainly because I needed some electricity for my camera gear that I brought. We stayed in the Sandia (watermelon) room. All rooms have theme names and matching decor. For example, our room was pink with red watermelons painted on the walls by local folk artists. I peeked into most of the rooms and they were a blend of naive art, vibrant color and Mexican antiques.
Because we stayed on the mainland side, we didn't benefit as much from the ocean breezes. If you need the breezes and are on the mainland side, I recommend asking for the Pajaro, La Pera or the Pinito (Pine tree) rooms. We had a ceiling fan...but at night, the staff (as a courtesy) sets up your bed with a big mosquito net which essentially keeps the ceiling fan air from reaching you. I eventually figured out what times the mosquitos were hanging around, and waited until they went away, then opened up the mosquito net. I am not clausterophobic, but being inside the net was just a tad too cozy for me.
At night the staff also lights all the candles in your room for you We got to stargaze...the stars are amazing. We saw a mama sea turtle lay eggs, saw every kind of bird and lizard and enjoyed pretty good food (not sensational, but very well prepared and fresh) at the Cantarito (the club house). We played billiards and read. We fished a little. We wanted to kayak, but it was a bit breezy when we were there. So...nature at every level, but also creature comforts. A restful pace with an attentive staff.
We were also able to check our email (with a very sloooow connection) at the check-in bungalow. I only did this because it was pouring rain one day and I had a little client business to take care of. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered.
We would've stayed one more day if we could have and yet there was a wedding guest who traveled back to Puerto Vallarta with us who had only been there 2 days and was going crazy because he didn't have tv or his laptop. He totally couldn't stand the place. It really depends on what you like to do on vacation. We're not all-inclusive resort kinds of people, but we definitely didn't mind being pampered at this beautiful location.
