“Good if you want to go trekking”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2011

As we arrived at the Shri Ganesh, we checked the different rooms and we noticed quit a diffrence in the quality of the rooms. The room we got, was small but had a proper(western) toilet. The room was quit dark as it only had one small window, but that was okay, because during the night it got quit cold outside but remained the same in the room.
The restaurant was good, with a variety of lovely Indian dishes.
The best thing in this hotel is Ashok, who works as a treeking guide for the hotel. You can do wonderful walks around the town with him, and he is attentive and notices animals from faraway. His English is not very good, but you'll understand him anyway.

“Really disapointed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2011

Went to this hotel due to being recommended it from family who had stayed (6 years ago) It seems to have gone very down hill since they stayed, but the main thing that disappointed us was the rude and unhelpful staff.

We booked weeks in advance for 4 nights due to it being Diwali and called the night before we arrived to check that everything was still okay and were assured it would be fine. BUT when we arrived we were told that we could only stay 3 nights!!! We asked if they could help us out at all and they just didn't!! Due to it being Diwali and EVERYTHING booked up to the max, we were left homeless for the night with no apology!!

Shri Ganesh seems to stay popular due to Lonely planet claiming that they are the only hotel in Mount Abu that caters for tourists, but we can assure you that now this is not the case and encourage you to look around and this is not the best place to stay any more.

“Backpacker haven managed by an idiosyncratic owner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2010

Shree Ganesh Hotel is one of the only places in Mt. Abu that caters to the single traveller. This makes it a great place for backpackers and for meeting other travellers.

The restaurant is definitely good and vale for money while other services by the establishment are also competitive. It is located at a walking distance from the Lake and Toad Rock tourist point. The Hotel also organizes treks into the jungle allowing for frequent sightings of bears and other animals in their natural habitat.

A highlight of this place is the owner who is a bit idiosyncratic and likes to take all your decisions by himself after he's done with a stringent identity check. Though it might seem that he is trying to push his own services like restaurant, city tour, bus bookings, he does keep your best interests in heart and if it is more feasible for you to take the government bus he'll simply say so in his curt manner. If you disagree with what he is telling or are not happy then say so unequivocally to get the message across. Once you have overcome the owner rest of the stay should be a breeze.

“Nice but a bit over Priced for what they deliver”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2010

The Hotel is ok, i think for the price they charge they should deliver more. The old owner is helpful to give you some information.

In Lonely Planet they write a Walking tour cost 200 rupis, but there are some tax increase, so now it costs 400 rupis, just to clime up the closest hilltop....

over all ok but i guess somewhere near buy you can get a better deal if you are a budget traveller.

“Awful, awful, awful - ignore the guidebooks and look elsewhere”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2010

If I could have clicked 'no stars' I would have. As it is, I had to click one, which this place doesn't deserve, unless you give stars for a hotel having walls and a roof. Lonely Planet says this place is run by a friendly Indian guy and his Irish wife, that they teach cooking and do yoga and it's a great place to stay. I've now found out this couple have moved to Ireland, leaving a moody, sullen relative in charge. Myself and my girlfriend arrived in Mount Abu on the bus from Udaipur and found the hotel. The room smelt bad and was really humid with no exterior windows. The bathroom smelt terrible. When I tried to negotiate on the price (I could have put up with the room for R250 or R300) I was told we were lucky to be getting the room for R400 and the owner would charge R1000 during Diwali! They have signs up everywhere FORBIDDING guests to wash THEIR OWN CLOTHES! There is also a curfew of 10:30pm! Unless you are some kind of machocist who enjoys being controlled and staying in a horrible environment, go somewhere else. We stayed for one night and got out of there early the next morning to move to the Lake View Paying Guest House (which was great - ask their son Charles to take you on a trek in the mountains!) - I suggest you do the same.
