So I get here the night before Easter and the entire town is completely CLOSED down. Unlike the rest of Indonesia, Flores is very Catholic. Easter is a big thing, and the whole town was at church including all the hotel owners! I was beginning to really regret my decision to have the driver go all the way to Ruteng and get there close to 9PM, when we found out that the local convent was open. Who would have thunk it? The only place open to stay on Easter is the convent!
Turns out this was one of the best places I stayed at in Flores. Super clean and super quiet, it cost me all of about $12 US, and they even gave me an extra pillow on request. They even provided a big bar of soap in the shower, which is a rarity this far out in the middle of nowhere. I'd packed my own, but it's a nice gesture. And not a single bug in sight.
In the morning, they provided an adequate breakfast, including eggs. No AC in the rooms, but Ruteng is up so high that it's one of the few places in Indonesia where you don't need it. My only real disappointment is that there was no hot water in my case, so they lose a star for that. But for $12, what do you expect?
