“4 stars HA! Maybe 20 years ago!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

This hotel has a beautiful location with a breathtaking view. We stayed for two nights over the Christmas holiday and were really only impressed by the views. We arrived two hours before check-in and we hoped they could check us in early; they said they’d let us know. When check-in time rolled around the room was “being cleaned.” Rather than checking us in early they had the room available to us an hour after check-in time. Outside the room on our patio there were food trays with the previous guest leftover uneaten food=super gross! The rooms are outdated and bathroom had a very 1960’s feel. Again the views are spectacular but not worth the price for the overall experience of the hotel itself. Also, if you are going to stay here I would advise you skip dining poolside because the food was bad and expensive (A burger is $12). There is a great place just down the beach called Father Rooster; it’s the equivalent of Red Robin. The resort would probably qualify for 4 stars twenty years ago, but it seems that he owners have let the place go.

“Forget about bugs, there were CRABS everywhere!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

Unbelievable! It was nighttime when I checked in, so I couldn't really take in the views or grounds for that matter. When I got to my room, it took the worker 10 min to figure out how to turn on the lights... I left left standing there in total darkness with swarms of bugs all around me waiting outside. When I finally got in my room, it looked nice and clean... until I stepped into the bathroom... WOW... SPIDERS and MOSQUITOES in at extremely outdated bathroom. It just didn't in well with the rest of the room. Since I was freaked out, I decided to check the beds for bedbugs or anything else that might be lurking. Found a couple insects... THEN to my surprise a giant spider was crawling on the floor next to my bed.... when i took a closer look... it was a CRAB!!! After spending some time killing off all the bugs, i decided to try and get some sleep... except there were birds screeching outside the room. Next morning, found some more CRABS on the floor crawling around.... there were even CRABS in the reception area... what type of place is this!!?? The people that worked the front desk were not helpful at all!! I wanted to reserve a couple trips to see volcanoes and go scubadiving but they were so incompetent that I ended up just going to coco beach to find tour groups. The restaurant is filthy and during breakfast there are birds that keep trying to steal your food. I saw a couple people get their food snatched from their plates by these birds and the workers do nothing but laugh. The owner is sort of sketchy also... he kept describing his resort to be the best.... meanwhile there were hardly any people there! I get that the view is nice and all but that's it... everything else was such a scam. PLEASE do not stay at this hotel... unless you can handle crabs crawling around your room floor.

“Great view, but maintenance poor and entire premises were dated.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2011

We chanced upon this resort, and I would have been upset if we were staying there more than one night. We spent most of our short Costa Rica vacation in the rainforest, in the La Fortuna area. It took us about 5 or 6 hours to drive from there to the coast, and we were looking for a place to spend the night. We chanced upon the Ocotal Beach Resort. The reception area was being renovated and painted, but the man who helped us check is was friendly. We asked to see the room, and they showed us around. We were blurry eyed from the long drive, and didn't notice the flaws that were very apparent as the day and night wore on. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom facilities adequate. The hot tub was not, well, hot! The pool was somewhat green, and the sunset bar was closed. The sunset, however, from the pool area was awesome. We ate dinner and breakfast at their restaurant, and they did not have some things on the menu. We had a great dinner with another guest, though, sitting on their balcony overlooking the majestic Pacific. We had a good time, but I would not want to spend my entire vacation at this resort! It must have been an awesome resort when it first opened, and with a lot of work could be again.

“We called it the place with THE view...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

We did not stay at the hotel as such but spent one evening at their terrace, having dinner and enjoying the view and sun going down. It's simply spectacular, you'd have to sea in order to understand. You're on top of it all, looking down to the bay/Ocotal Beach and far far North and away. Facing West you cannot miss to down your bottle of white whine parallel to the sun going down and disappearing at the horizon just in front of you. Go see yourself... The dinner itself was expensive, but okay. Nothing really special, others would say: not worth that price, but, it comes with THE view. My wife, out of curiosity, had a lokk at one of their Junior Suites and they were in perfect shape. Though I am not in aposition to really qualify what it's like spending a night.

“Tired hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 May 2011

the hotel is on great grounds with spectacular views. The hotel is run down. The gym was not open, the pool bar closed , the beach side restaurant closed. It looked like with just a little upkeep it could be a great property.
