“'Breathtaking' for Spyns Tour de France Clients”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2010

After a stay in October 2009, I booked the entire hotel for a 2010 Tour de France trip. Where to begin? Ostape is a little hard to find tucked into a beautiful mountain valley just a short distance from the border with Spain. But it is well worth the effort. It's not a traditional hotel but rather a collection of luxury villas around a large central building which houses their gourmet restaurant. Once within the gates, guests are issued their own private golf carts as the grounds are extensive. Half of our group will be cyclists and the setting couldn't be more ideal with incredible views of the surrounding mountains. The rooms are a mix of traditional materials yet with with modern features. My room had an enormous bed and huge bathroom. The food and service were exquisite but I've rated the service "good" rather than "excellent" as there was a considerable delay in response time regarding our July 2010 reservations. Otherwise, heaven on Earth.

“special place”

Amazing place with stunning setting.Drive down tiny road and the estate doesn't disappoint with beautiful villas spaced on hills around the grounds and surrounding this is a lush rolling countryside.
The villas are bright and spacious and with the distances between other buildings they feel really private.the is excellent as expected in this Alain Ducasse affiliated hotel.
Booked on short notice while travelling to biarritz and managed to get a good price well worth checking out

“Bed Bugs at Bidarray”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2008

We stayed at this hotel for four nights and each morning I had little red bites on my face, arms and legs. Having never seen or been bitten by a bedbug, I don't know what had caused these bites. Neither did the receptionist, who claimed not to know what they were.
On the last morning, we saw a small bug on the bed and my husband said maybe it was a bed bug. However at Euros 430 per night, we assumed this could not be the case. Imagine my horror when, upon checking the internet at home, I found the bites and the bug matched exactly the photos for bedbugs.
I wrote immediately to Ostape and heard nothing. Having complained to Ostape on several occasions and being ignored, I asked American Express to intervene on my behlaf. As a result, Ostape apologized for the "inconvenience" and suggested I might like to experience the "true meaning of the Basque country and spend two more nights at Ostape" on them. I refused. After all, once bitten, twice shy. I did ask them to credit my Amex card for the two nights, but once again, I was ignored. Being bitten was a horrible experience, and being ignored made it much worse.

“Heaven on earth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2007

We arrived in the French Basque Country, passed the bridge in Bidarrray and there we were.. away from it all... but what an enchanting perspective. We were warmly greeted by Catherine who showed us to our Suite, it felt like like a real country house with the fireplace waiting for us and the wood standing by the front door. We were originally in the region for business, but truly thought we were on a weekend away (though it was midweek).
Welcomed afterwards by Francois Ricau, the hotel manager who gave us a superb tour of the 45 hectare property. We were lucky enough to savour the cuisine of Alain Soulhiac, its magret & foie gras, the chipirons (calamari) with its delicious risotto; on our second night, we were booked at the Auberge I Parla; you have to dine there at least one night if you stay at Ostape: it'd be a shame to miss it.
Overall, it was an enchanting experience, the location is incredible, the hospitality as best as it can get and do not believe that the Basque citizens are not welcoming.... Just try to share their love for their region... and you will be won over...
