“Blink and you will miss this eco haven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2011

The hosts John and Ceilia were very welcoming; also the hotel is a vital asset to the surrounding area. The message of sustainability and the eco ethos is very easily adhered to and I left with the intention of continuing the lifestyle.

The "Hobbit" room was incredible; those who judge a book by its cover would be wise to learn to see past the external appearance - our first impression was that looked like a shed, a joy to me but to others not such a welcome sight. The room itself was very modern, clean, tidy, and surprisingly warm. It is converted from an old workshop; constructed out of local timber and slate and insulated with sheep’s wool. The roof is a living roof, and apparently in the summer month’s sheep graze upon it. The grounds were great for exercising the dog, and the hosts were more than happy to give advice on where to visit in which to take a more strenuous walk.

The only let down is the local area, Blaenau Ffestiniog has seen better days but with the forthcoming multimillion pound investment to commence this year, this can only improve the amenities nearby.

“Epitome of hospitality in a quirky beautiful location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2011

The host John was wonderfully helpful to his guests - picking them up at the train station if they come without cars. He gave us a private tour of the slate mine just outside the guest house. He's on a mission to run the guest house as green as he possibly can. The guest house is in the middle of a spectacular northern Wales landscape - hills to the south, slate mine to the north. It conveniently is on a train line - walking distance to a narrow gauge steam train which runs between B F and the port town of Porthmadog.

“A great guest house in a wonderful area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2010

Having got rather wet with my two dogs staying in my little camper van in the Beddgelert Forest I almost returned home to Berkshire. But as I love Porthmadog and the surrounding area I consulted the Tourist Information Office in that town and they made a booking for four nights for me and dogs at Bryn Elltyd Ty Llety (Guest House). I am so glad they did! It is a very friendly B & B with comfortable accommodation and good food (breadkfast and by arrangement evening meals). The proprietors, John and Ceilia, are great hosts to all their guests, including my dogs. Being an Eco- guest house there is a proper concern over the environment and saving energy, but at the same time having a great time and enjoying the wonderful landscape of the surrounding area, and the great narrow guage railways - the Ffestiniog Railway, which passes around the property on its way to Blaenau Ffestiniog, the Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon, which at peasent runs to the outskirts of Porthmadog, and the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, which is in Porthmadog. close to the Cambrian Coast Railway (Arriva Trains). Also a good base for walkers/climbers and cyclists in Snowdonia, and for exploring the old slate mining and quarrying area.
I extended my stay to a fifth night and can't wait to go back again.

“Something Different!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

We had 2 nights at Brynn Elltyd, en route to Heathrow, at the end of a 4 week holiday in France and Scotland, . It was a lovely place to spend our last couple of nights. We arrived early evening and were welcomed with a delicious homemade cake & tea by Ceilia & John. Even though we hadn't previously arranged to have dinner there, we were kindly offered this option and had a 3 course home-cooked meal. The room was upstairs and fairly small but had its own ensuite and was quite adequate for our requirements. A full breakfast was included each morning. We spent the next day at the beautiful Bodnant Gardens (about 30 mins drive away), then returned to travel on the Ffestiniog steam railway to Portmeirion (a bit touristy but in a fascinating area). We made the mistake of trying to get a meal in Blaenau Ffestiniog that night - the only place open was the local "chippie" , so eat in at Brynn Elltyd rather than this! There are good walks in the local area and the slate mountains are amazing. We only had time for a short walk but could see the potential for a walking holiday. John & Ceilia are both very helpful and have lots of knowledge about the area and its history. Ceilia recommended a scenic route back towards Heathrow which we greatly enjoyed on a beautiful day.

“Stunning views, Warm friendly welcome, place full of character”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2010

This place is fantastic, it's not a typical B&B but really takes its character from the area in a way that distinguishes it from anywhere I have stayed.
The owners, Celia and John have gone to great lengths to provide comfortable surroundings to really take advantage of the natural beauty of the Welsh mountains and mould it into the fabric of the place.
John knows a great deal of the history of the surrounding area and he's happy to share with anyone who asks.
This B&B is perfect for anyone who loves the great outdoors, we woke up to see sheep grazing outside the window.

The Hobbit is a sight to behold!
