“Tranquil, relaxing and luxurious country charm”

After spending 7 nights at a nice, contemporary hotel, we were looking forward to arriving by hired car picked up from Palma Airport, 15 minutes away, to Son Julia Country House, a few minutes from Llucmajor. It felt like part 2 of our holiday as we didn't feel the need to hire a car whilst staying in Palma. A car is definately needed when staying here. The turning into the long drive up to the hotel can be missed ( as we did a few times! ) so be prepared for the sharp right turn if coming from the airport direction.

The first impressions of the grand country house were spectacular, with its large, stone water feature at the front of the entrance. We were greeted by a friendly lady who showed us to our room (106 ) and other facilities and the luxurious grounds. We booked the Garden Terrace, which was awesome. There was a marble bathroom with thick, white bath robes, but a toilet that was rather high on the wall! The king size bed was very comfortable, with high quality linen, Egyptian cotton, maybe. The garden terrace offered wicker furniture, with the lush grass infront ( the sprinklers are on a timer!) It was nice to sit at the terrace, watching the sun set, drinking chilled white wine from the local supermarket in Llucmajor, a fraction of the cost compared to the mini bar! A fustrating thing was not receiving English channels, only news. I would have loved to have got ready in the evenings with the music channels, instead of the German channels.

The grounds are lush and well kept. It was unusual but quirky to see chickens and cockerels roaming the grounds! There is a smaller pool, where BBQ's take place and this is more intimate. Usually, it was just the 2 of us here. We walked through the grounds and the beautiful, large, blue pool appeared, with fountains of water to massage your back! One one side there is the pool bar serving delicious, yet over priced beverages - cocktails are 12 Euros each, so happy hour of half price goes down well! We ate once on our arrival day - toasted sandwiches with some French fries - 14 Euros each!

We booked a meal on the 2nd night, as Tuesdays offer a spectacular BBQ and it certainly was for 39 Euros each! We ate also on Thursday, as there was a talented Latin American guitarist player/singer. There was nothing that we discovered in Llucmajor in the way of restaurants and my man was quite happy to drive 30-40 minutes away to good restaurants and areas he knew, as he travels with work on the island. We met up with friends that live in Alaro, about 30 minutes from Son Julia House and there are some lovely restaurants there around the square and the quaint church. We also travelled to Portals Nous, on the south west coast for meals, the cove of Elles Portals and the beautiful beach of Es Trenc beach, with its 11 km of white sands and shallow, clear blue sea. This is south east of the island, about 15 -20 minutes from the hotel. We had lunch there, although a bit pricey. We also went go - karting not far from Son Julia Hotel. That was good fun, about 15 minutes away. If you require any laundry done, unless you want to pay the hotel's laundry prices of 11 Euros for a shirt, for example, I would recommend buying some sachets and do the laundry in the bath at those prices! But there is no clothes airer above the bath. Maybe not the sort of thing you do at a 5 star luxury hotel!

On the lower ground floor there is the very hot jacuzzi, a cooler pool and spa facilities, which I'm sure are perfect.

However, a week of chilling in the surroundings of country luxury.

Room Tip: Garden Terrace

“Perfect”

Just returned from a fabulous trip to this hotel with my two children, aged 14 and 15. We took advantage of all the facilities, ate lunch by the pool, happy hour drinks, ate dinner in their restaurant every night, and relaxed in all of their pools. The largest pool is huge and beautiful, sharing this with only 24 other rooms seemed incredibly indulgent. The second largest pool is also very beautiful, with a BBQ area that they cook lunch at - we didn't use this as we only had lunch at the hotel once, but it looked very nice. The last pool is a large heated indoor pool with jacuzzi and turkish bath, we were there every evening and had it to ourselves every time! On several occasions at dinner in the restaurant I was joined by a vegetarian friend, and they always produced something delicious for her. We stayed in a nice garden view room, at the end of the hall (room 214), never heard any other guests, ever. All the staff were really lovely, from the cheery maids to the management, I found them unpretentious, accommodating and professional. The bedding was lovely, high quality linen and very comfortable mattresses, ensuring a restful sleep. I can't wait to return.

“Stunning Country House Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

We have just returned from 4 days at Son Julia and absolutely loved everything about it.It is a beautifully decorated country house hotel with all the modern and contemporary touches you would expect from a 5 star establishment. If you want a total rest in luxurious surroundings then this is the hotel for you.The hotel was full but as it only has 24 rooms, it felt quiet and peaceful.Son Julia has two outdoor pools and we spent two days at the smaller pool in total solitude, absolute heaven. The food is exquisite.I don,t consider 40 euros for a three course a expensive as the standard is very high. The staff are fantastic, there to help but not intrusive. We used the gym and the spa, both excellent.Look out for Lily, the resident cat who adds to the homely feel.Yes the hotel is close to the road but you really don,t notice it.This is by far the best hotel we have ever stayed in and we plan to go back at least once a year.A must for Grown Ups !!!!!

“Hotel was very good but too quiet!”

We couldn't fault the hotel rooms, very clean and comfy but don't leave any biscuits lying or you will get an ant infestation! Food is very good although it is a bit pricey! The pools are amazing, especially the large one which is heated! The only thing that made us feel uncomfortable was some of the other guests, one couple we encountered every day were very rude, it doesn't take a lot to say "good morning" to other guests instead of a grudging grunt as a response! All in all a great holiday but don't expect anything lively as there seems to be an unwritten rule that no one is allowed to speak to each other! Oh, and it doesn't help to see middle aged, peroxide blonde, overweight females at the pool wearing a hankie sized bikini - yuk!

“Perfect relaxing girly weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

Stayed here for a long weekend in July with a group of 6 girlfriends. We absolutely LOVED this hotel! It is really beautiful, the rooms are gorgeous, the pool is amazing, it was basically perfect!

The weekend consisted of lying by the pool enjoying daiquiris and yummy food and Son Julia was perfect for this. The hotel is very romantic so we tried not to be too annoying to the other guests, so apologies if we were - but the hotel coped very well with all the various demands of our group!

We ate in the restaurant one evening - the food is excellent and great value, and on the second night the hotel recommended the Nassau Beach restaurant in Es Portixol. It was a fantastic recommendation - exactly what we were looking for - gorgeous setting, great food, beautiful people!

Can't wait to come back :)
