“Night in a Museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

The Parador of Oropesa was the very first Parador in Spain. It is a hotel set in a castle built in the 1300s. It sits on a dominant hill above the plains of La Mancha. It truly is a museum as well as a castle. The paintings, furnishings and memorabilia are of interest to history buffs. The setting is wonderful, the town of Oropesa is interesting and the rooms are good.

“Excellent Place for a Couple of Nights”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2011

Of all the places in our tour of Cuenca, Toledo and now here, this was the best hotel. The atmosphere here is wonderful and romantic. Goodness sake we stayed in an old palace connected to a castle! It doesn't get much cooler than that.

Our room was on the 5th floor which gave us a great view over the town. The room was large, and had a big bed with a canopy. Like something out of a fairy tale. My wife thought the bed was a bit hard however. The bathroom was also quite spacious.

Food was excellent but expensive particularly with the terrible exchange rate to the dollar.

The service was excellent and the people very friendly. I was particularly impressed that the lady at reception remembered our names when we saw her the next day.

Don't forget to visit the castle which is attached to the hotel. You can also rent a video tour thing for e euros which is in English and Spanish. The people in the tourist information office down the street are particularly helpful.

Many good restaurants in Oropesa so you are not limited to the food at the Parador.

By the way, the name of the town is "weight in gold" and refers the the legend of a princess who was taken ransom for her weight in gold. The town coat of arms is a fair damsel holding weighing scales.

“Friendly staff in lovely Castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

On a relaxed drive from Toledo we came upon Oropesa and entered grand entrance to enchanting Castle courtyard. A real castle with really friendly staff at reception making us feel welcome. Lovely dip in pool before we had a truly splendid dinner and wine with exceptionally friendly waiters engaging all members of family. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit

“Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

We had our wedding celebration there recently and also stayed for two nights. The hotel is in a wonderful location and full of character given the old buildings and antique furnishings.

Our room was lovely with dual aspect, four poster bed and lovely and clean (if somewhat basic) bathroom. It had a mini bar, wifi and air con.

Our wedding celebration was held in one of the function rooms but we also laid on a tour of the castle, the church and the local eagle museum (!) for our guests which was very good indeed. The food at the celebration was a 5 course affair and all the guests (all Spanish) said it was excellent. They catered for my vegetarian diet very well too. They gave us a ceremonial sword to cut the cake which we got to keep. The staff were attentive and very efficient. What more could you want!

Afterwards we had drinks on one of the terraces and I was somewhat annoyed at 11.50 for a Jack Daniels and coke but not surprised given the venue.

Breakfast was buffet style and provided a good variety including great Spanish staples such as migas, tortilla and chorizo sausages. The views over the sierra from the breakfast table were stunning.

Thoroughly recommended.

A wonderful place to stay.

“Nice castle, poor bathrooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2011

Bathroom long, narrow and tired! New bathrooms r required now! Careful in the ruined castle visit, can be really dangerous. Can't believe has H & S certificate.
