“Bad surprises”

Well ,well... after reading on site's hotel, we thought that Dolphin Bay can be a good place to spend 7 beautiful days. Unfortunatelly, we had bad surprises from the beginning, surprises that we had to get used to.
1. The hotel is only 3 ***. The rooms are very small, that's why we accepted the hotel's offer that to replace it with a bungalow (we were in vacation 3 persons). Luckily for us, we didn't pay extra fee.
2. The rooms (and the bungalows, too) smelled like hell. The air was unbreathable. The bedding was clean, but impregnated with dark smell, too. The best surprise here was the towels: they smelled like goat's milk!!!
3. You are under attack all night! The mosquitos are very aggresive!
4. The beach was very dirty, in contrast with a very beatiful water, clean with smooth sand, no rocks or other annoying water creatures. The best surprise here are the sunbeds. In hotel review, it writes that they are included in "all inclusive" offer. Well, they cost 2,5 Euro.
4. The food: not greek at all. Anyway, you can find here good tzatziki and some salads. The beer was "cheap" one and the wine was a disaster. The juices were "chemical" (in a country were oranges and lemons are at their home).
5. The animating team was desastrous! They made a 7 days programme for retarted persons. Like the mosquitos, they were aggresive, insisting to participate as a "laughing toy" to their programme. The best way to have fun is to ignore them!
Conclusion: better to avoid the hotel, because is preffered by russians and polish. The decent tourists of all were the romanians (believe it, or not!).
Anyway, the Crete is a very beautiful island, if you rent a car and go for yourself! Avoid the guide and the hotel trip offers!

“Great value of money!!”

After reading previous reviews I became very sceptical about this hotel and already thought what I could I do to change it, but im glad that I didnt, because the location of the hotel was just about 7 minute drive from the Heraklion airport and we got into the rooms as soon as we arrived. No waiting at the reception. I was pleasantly suprised about the reception & waiting hall - there were leather sofas and Wi- fi internet without any charge.'
Food was average, breakfast was a bit poor, but everyone could find something for themselves. Lunch was good. Big choice of salads and pasta, as well as rice, meat and fish. Every day there was something different. Dinner was great, similar to lunch, but with greater choice. But as we later heard from the guide, there is reason why the breakfast is poor. Thats is specific to Greece culture. Usually greeks drink only coffee on mornings. Staff was very friendly and tried to help as they could. They even put us breafast on at 5:00 am , because we had an early excursion. And ofcourse they didnt forget to leave launch boxes at the reception, so the service was really good. Rooms were cleaned every day and no tips were asked. You could leave them if you wished.
Animators at the pool played music all day long and organised activities as water polo, stretching, water aerobics, water volleyball and many others. They organised many games at the evening too, so it was never boring. All inclusive bar with alcohol closes at 11 pm , so after that there is quiet at the hotel and you can have a peacefull sleep. Beach is few steps from the hotel and hotel has sandy beach, which is good, because you cannot hurt your feet at the rocks which are on other beaches. I would definetely recommend this hotel to my friends and im pleased with my time that I spent there.

“Completely average - 4 star in it's dreams!”

Crete was the last stop on our Greek adventure and our package deal included this hotel. I was nervous to stay here because of the reviews, but thought most of the bad ones were quite outdated and would see how it goes. Upon arrival, it is clear to see that the place is very outdated and very basic. The room is good enough though - good size bed (no bugs but ask for an extra pillow), small patio, decent bathroom and very clean. The facilities include a big pool and access to the beach. In general we were comfortable, however there are a few major issues:

- The food is awful. It is usually seeping in oil and tastes terrible. I am a vegetarian and out of the probably 15 salad options, 11 of them had some meat product, and the others were not appetising or satisfactory as a meal.

- The food staff are offensive. - We felt we were being scrutinised during our meals. Based on this, we only had two meals there (four nights we stayed). One of the meals we had, we were confused whether drinks from the orange juice dispenser was included in meals - subsequently they made us pay 3.80 for two small glasses and when we told them we were confused they proceeded to argue with us. This rude and unbending sevice put a bad taste in our mouths. Surely if the customer is confused, you explain in a decent manner and not cause a scene? After this we were not interested in eating there thereafter.

- To compound the above, the resort does not have any other option to eat at - no restaurant or snack bar. If you want to go to town to eat - be prepared for the driveway. It is quite a walk!

As a postive, reception was fantastic and the lady during the day was incredibly helpful and kind.

“Enjoyable place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2007

Ok, previous comments complained, that hotel is no way 4 star. Actually i think it is, because of its service. I don't know any 3* hotel, which offers such services like you can get in doplhin bay - self-control air condition, animation service, sports, pool and environment.

Everything about this hotel would be perfect, instead of how rooms looks like. I've found out several problems, which should not occur in 4 star hotel - facilities - everything together and shower is not separated, water goes under the toilet and remains there even several hours later - no way to go out. When we arrived, water from pipes was orange colour, but just several first uses. washbasin and shower equipment looks too old.

Other things were just fine - nothing special, but if you want to enjoy holiday, nothing what annoys. no bugs in beds, absolutely not. No mosquitos, it was very fine. Air condition necesary, i would not survive without. 3* hotels usualy dont have self controled air condition in price.

Food was fine, enough vegetables, fruit and professional staf. Dont ask them for orange juice, because they will give you lemonade with orange flavour, the same with grapefruit. More safe is beer, vine and coke- kinds.

Location is kind of good in compare to other hotels - apolonia beach is too close to oil power plant and too far from center and other are just in the noise of city center. Dolphin bay is very close to center, but no way you hear noise from that.

Lifeguard on the beach was really annoying, but as i heard, everywhere in ammoudara like this. Sometimes they even dont allow you to go to sea.

If i would have to go there again, i would be not against, but probably in the future i will chose other location, too many nice places to stay always in one place :)

“Awful!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2006

First the Dolphin Bay is NO way a 4 star hotel! The premises are beautiful but the room and hotel itself are gross! Me and my friends rented a bungolow in August. Upon arrival we were tired so we just wanted to sleep, we get into bed only to find bugs in our beds! Not just one but they were everywhere!!!!!! So we went to reception and ask them to change our room, we had to argue with them for over half an hour to get them to change our room. They said there is nothing we can do, the previous people must have been dirty, thats not our fault! Anyway, they showed us another room, guess what?? Yep, it has bugs in it to! So then we requested a room inside the hotel, thinking maybe the bugs are only in the outside rooms. Guess what?? You got it! Another room with bugs! I am not a girly girl who is affraid of bugs, but come on, would you really like to sleep in a bed full of bugs?? If I wanted to go camping I would not have booked a 4* hotel. The place and the staff were just awful. We decided after checking 4 rooms and them all having bugs we were not staying here, we took a walk at 2am and found a hotel a few blocks away, Petousis. They were very nice, and only charged 50E per night per room. The rooms were miniture studio apartments with a kitchenette. This was a high-end economy hotel and guess what.. NO BUGS!!!! It was very simple but very clean. I hope my advice helps =) Oh and by the way, my travel agent had to fight with Dolphin Bay for weeks to get a refund for us. but we got a full refund back! =)

  • Liked — The only thing that was nice was the beach and pool area.
  • Disliked — The BUGS IN MY BED!
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't stay here, over priced and dirty!
