“What a disappointment!”

Stayed here one night as part of a tour with a first class tour company.

The room: On the first floor with no ventilation since the fan didn't work. we had to sleep all night with the window open and anyone over 5 feet tall could have climbed in that window. Our twin bedded room had one pillow and two lamps one without a light bulb. I called the front desk and asked for a pillow and was told they did not have any because they were full. Then I asked for a light bulb and was told they did not have any because they were full. I said, but I'm sitting in the dark. Sorry, Madam no light bulbs.

The hallways and stairs are lighted by a touch pad outside your room and the lights are timed to stay lit about 30 seconds then they shut off. If you can't do the hall and/or stairs in that time, you are plunged into darkness and have to feel along the wall for another touch pad! apparently there are no lawyers in France!!!

The setting is beautiful. The food was great, but I would never stay there again or recommend it because of the safety issues. The orangerie has no attendant on premises , despite a sign that says it does, and it's a good walk from the main building so you're really on your own.

  • Liked — the grounds wer beautiful
  • Disliked — the accommodations were second class at best.

“Couldn't wait to leave”

We stayed here recently in the Orangerie. The rooms are drab and dirty. The carpets in the orangerie are filthy in the entrance area and also in the bedrooms - on the last day my husband found a shard of broken glass under the bed. We were provided with one small bottle of shampoo rationed out over the week and the linen was not changed daily. The Chateau itself is quite nice but there is a stale smell in the reception area. We dined in the retaurant one night - nice but pricey and staff a little bit stand offish.
You are also really isolated from Perigeux here and you can only really walk to one local site the Abbey. A car is vital.
If you stay at the hotel the main facility is the swimming pool (there are also tennis courts) and the area around this was unswept, some of the tiles around the swimming pool were loose and the furniture itself neither comfortable or clean. It is also down a number of steps and so would not be particulalry accessible for children / people with mobility difficulties.

Other than the swimming pool and the restaurant terrace there is no place to sit out - one hard bench in front of the Orangerie !
I wouldn't recommend this place and we could not wait to leave.

“Not anything special”

Les Chateau des Reynats is located in the village of Chancelade. From the outside the chateau looks like a fairy-tale castle. Inside the lobby is rather dark and the stairway is somewhat awkward to navigate around to get to the lounge area and the dining room. The dining room is truly magnificent with grand chandeliers and round tables covered nicely with linen tablecloths. There are 16 rooms in the Chateau itself so other accomodations are offered in the annex. Guess where we stayed? Our room in the annex was OK. The room had rose colored walls with toile drapes and bedspread. Our bed was a double so there was not a lot of room.
In the bathroom the towels were very thin and we were given one small inexpensive piece of soap for two of us. There were no facial tissues available to us, however, they did offer shampoo and gels and everything was clean. The room had no airconditioning and if we opened the window insects came in, especially if it was open in the evening with a light on! The walls in the hallway were covered with photos of events that occurred long ago in this area of France. This was very interesting, but also quite utilitarian looking. The lights continually went off in the hall and entryway if there was no one using the area so often we were groping around searching for the lightswitch so that we could see our way to our room.
I thought the dining room was very elegant and befitting a chateau. The dining room opened to the terrace that was by the pool. It was a nice arrangement and looked quite lovely. The pool itself could have used a cleaning. I did not use the pool while we were there because it was quite cool that evening. The trees outside the chateau and the annex were huge Chestnut trees and made for a nice promenade.
I was there on a tour and was able to go into some of the rooms in the Chateau itself. They were not impressive at all! In fact, they were rather strange to me. They had odd colors on the walls and rather stark decorations that smacked of "modern".
I had read the comments from others about the "annex" so I was not disappointed or upset that we were not staying in the chateau itself. This is truly a lovely area of France and is full of places to stay.

“Overrated”

We stayed at the Chateau des Reynats for two nights during a tour of France recently. When you drive in to the grounds its very impressive with plenty of parking and attractive surroundings. However, we were staying in the Orangerie (the chateau's annex building within the grounds) and the double room we were given was a little small, stuffy (no air-con) and had a very poor view of the neighbouring building.

The staff were a little on the snotty side and we had problems on our second night when they were holding a wedding party in the chateau and had erected a make-shift dancefloor within the annex building. We were kept awake untill well after 2am with singing, shouting and loud banging French music, not to mention the dj schreeching in efforts to whip up the crowd every two minutes! This was infuriating and after our complaints the following morning, the fee for our second nights stay was waved.

All in all, we would probably not return to Chateau des Reynats. But if we did i would definately make sure we were booked to stay in the actual Chateau rooms and not the Orangerie this time and that there were no weddings booked during our stay!

Also worth a mention, the pool was refreshing as it was very hot whilst we were there, however, it could have done with a clean.... it was absolutely full of dead flies and wasps!
