I can't recommend this hotel enough.
Ambience is fabulous. You feel like you are walking through a regal palace belonging to the ancient kings. There are monkeys swinging from vines and jumping into the water like playful kids. The pool is amazing - clean and so warm!
We stayed in the most basic room, and were SO pleasantly surprised. It was huge! And had everything we needed (except the DVD player - but who is there to watch DVD's, really?). Everything had a new but incredibly tasteful feel to it. It wasn't garish and ugly. The foyer blended into the surrounds like a colonial masterpiece.
Service was spot on. Can't really fault it. The staff at the tour office especially went out of their way to help amend the wrong doings of an outside jeep safari driver (which had nothing to do with the hotel, but they felt so sorry for us, they did everything possible to bring a smile back to our faces).
Food was authentic, varied and tasty (and didn't have the excessive amount of salt that some places in SL can have). Service in the restaurant was really well done. We were attended to immediately, checked on frequently (by different staff members), our glasses were never empty for longer than 20 seconds, AND they had the healthiest option for sri lankan food on offer (red rice - high fibre, mukunuwanna kedda - high vitamin herbal porridge for breakfast) - which is such a refreshing change to things swimming in oil or ruined in the deep frier.. Oh - and you will put your diet aside when you see the whole ROOM set aside for desserts. The home made woodapple ice cream with some toasted cashews is amazing.
I would definitely recommend this, and it certainly offers really good value for money - especially when you compare it to other places in the vicinity.
I'll be coming back for sure.

Room tip: Book on the online sites like agoda.com etc You'll be surprised how similar it is to the local rates.

It was my second visit, previously some years ago only for a buffet lunch - I remember how we enjoyed the spread. This time was a treat from my husband, a late birthday celebration....
As I remember things have improved in maybe tenfold and I would go back again and again. This is the place to be if you are looking to truly relax and forget all the hustle of your daily chaos. I really like the tastefully done rooms and the way they are located providing maximum privacy and seclusion. Plenty of activities to keep you occupied and to relax. I enjoyed cycling in the premises, something I have not done in ages…… The hotel organize elephant rides which is a must do and a experience in its own. Its amazing to ride the giant elephant and while doing that we could treat it with yummy bananas….
Food and other facilities are value for money and the surrounding of the hotel is beyond words. Its only a couple of minutes drive to witness the gathering of elephants.
Not stopping from providing us with all, when we checked out we were given a carry bag with delicious munchables!

Room tip: Best is to ask the staff according to your requirement!

This accommodation was booked for us (I usually book all of our holidays independently) and we were not disappointed.
The location was perfect for exploring Sigiriya(30 mins drive), Polonnaruwa(90mins), Dambulla(30 mins) and doing a family elephant ride; Kandy is also 90 mins away. The well maintained pool was a welcome relief after a hot, sweaty day of activity!!
We checked in late (around 7:30pm) after flying in at 1:30pm, and were glad we pushed on to get there the same day (most people stop off at Galle, Colombo etc).
TK, the resident botanist was absolutely wonderful with our kids, and extremely knowledgeable, as he took us for a walk around the farm. The 'Butterfly Farm' was a huge drawcard for our 9y.o. daughter (who had visions of butterflies landing on an outstretched finger) but as we visited during the low, low season this was not to be! Nevertheless, TK had the kids spotting & naming the few butterflies that were around, listening to birds, watching bugs, weaver ants, lizards & squirrels, naming & tasting fruits & even helped my 11y.o. son select, husk, split, eat/drink a coconut ... he was chuffed!
Staff very friendly; rooms rustic, clean, comfy; excellent pool, billiards (400Rs) was popular. Live music (cruise boat style) would have been daggy in any other setting. Food was amazing; fresh & many choices, loved the dessert room concept, nice mix of Sri Lankan & Western choices. Monkeys were very entertaining! Beautiful setting near a lake & own small pond on the grounds.
Only disappointment was not staying long enough; our 2 nights passed far too quickly!

We've been pretty spoiled by other hotels all around Sri Lanka, so even though the amenities and food were good at the lodge, the value for money really was poor in comparison to other places we have visited.

The fact that they have individual cabanas and the overall landscaping of the hotel are great, but the size of their delux rooms is just not adequate when you take the cost into account (and we were on local rate!)

Food was lovely, no complaints about that, and the majority of the staff were good, although some (i.e. pool staff) really couldn't care less whether you were paying guests or not. This is such a shame because in general John Keells staff (the group who run Cinnamon hotels) are excellent. We actually went with one of our sons to this hotel to attend a weekend summer camp organised by John Keells and the programme was just awesome. However, we wouldn't consider staying at the hotel again, simply because it was really over-priced.

Room tip: If you're with kids, better to go for a suite
