We booked this hotel for two nights because they offered a good price and the pictures on the internet looked good. The hotel also has a very good location. It turned out the room you actually get for that price is rather old.
Upon arrival the receptionist asked us if we wanted to upgrade the room at an additional cost of HK$280,- per night, which was a promotional price, they said. We asked to have a look at the rooms and found that an upgrade mostly meant a renovated room. You also get to use the mini-bar for free, but that only has 1 can of beer, 1 coke, 1 diet coke and 1 sprite. Because we liked the modern look and style, we took the upgrade anyway. We got a room at their top floor, dubbed the penthouse executive floor.
In the middle of the night however, some machine (a pump?) above our room turned on for about 5min. and then off every 20min. or so, at a rather loud volume, which woke me up. I called the front desk to inform them of this after the second time this had happened and they said they would fix it. When the machine turned on again, I called the front desk again and they told me housekeeping couldn't fix it and engineering would the next day. So much for a good night's sleep. When I finally fell asleep because I was very tired, I woke up pretty late, missing the breakfast, which was until 10am. Felt tired that whole day though.
I complained to the manager about this, asking for a refund of the upgrade fee several times, since this felt like a downgrade to me. That was not possible according to him, but they could change our room. We said we'd change the room in the evening, because we wanted to go out first. When we came back, they'd put a fruit basked in the new room, which was nice of them. I certainly slept a lot better in that new room, but it's never completely silent. I don't know about the other floors, but the penthouse floor always has a hum from the utility floor that's above it.
In general, the staff are friendly and helpful. Except when it comes to refunds...
The internet connection was not very stable in the room, but better in the lounge of the penthouse floor. In the new room, I was unable to connect to the wifi, both with my computer and phone.
You need your room access card to use the elevator, but that system doesn't always work very well, so the staff often needs to help you with the elevator.
The renovated rooms have a bathroom with a rain shower. In our first room, the shower cabin was a bit small, which means there's a lot of water in the rest of the bathroom after taking a shower. There was only a small screen to block the water. In the second room, the shower cabin was a bit larger, so there it was fine. It always helps to completely open the bathroom door though, because it then acts as an extension of the water screen.
Breakfast was ok. You can choose from American (ham & eggs), Chinese (fried rice/noodles) or dim sum.
The next time, I would book a different hotel, even if it were more expensive. Their pricing tactics don't appeal very much to me and I don't like to be lucky with the room I get. It was a so so experience to me. I had expected more from a Best Western hotel.
Room Tip: Well, I don't recommend the penthouse floor 15, see comments above. That leaves floors 13 and 14...
