“Best view in the world. Some of the smallest, least imaginative bedrooms to be found anywhere”
I really wanted to love this hotel. The exterior of the villa is beautiful and the veranda is very special. Obviously the views are magnificent. The main sitting area is attractive in the way your Italian Grandmother's would be. Not quite antique furniture but certainly not new either--which meant that it was cozy to look at but not very comfortable.
The real downside to the hotel is the bedrooms and bathrooms. The bedrooms are small by any standard and very cheaply furnished. My bed felt like a cot. There was one small mattress that was too cheap to be comfortable. My pillow was hard and uncomfortable. The carpeting was the kind you would find in a 1950s yard foreman's office. To put some stats to it, my bedroom was 7' x 18' or 126 sq ft. That is a double bedroom. The bathroom was so small that if I turned on the shower while using the toilet I could accomplish both acts at the same time. Notwithstanding, the views out the windows are some of the best any hotel could offer.
As to service, the young lady (I believe the daughter of the owner) is an utter delight. She is always pleasant and helpful. Her mother was very frowny and never said one pleasant thing while we were there. The breakfast lady was also a bit of a downer. The rest of the staff were very kind and a bit shy.
The breakfast is a delight on that beautiful veranda. The fare is continental. There were always a delicious homemade cake, good selection of yogurts and delicious cheese. There were no eggs, bacon, sausages, etc. Our dinner was quite good but certainly there were far better places to have dinner--for example Al Veluu, Valverde, Locanda dell' Isola Comacina, Osteria La Tana dei Pescatori.
Argegno is a beautiful, little village with fun restaurants, pizzerias, bars, etc. It seems to be a gathering point of locals and tourists alike. Therefore, I loved the location of this hotel and its setting.
I think your decision to stay here is an easy one. If you can content yourself with a stunning view, great veranda and authentic villa and would not be bothered by tiny, no-better-than-dorm-room bedrooms then I think you would be happy here. Without a view of the lake, the bedrooms would drive me to suicide.
