“Beautiful building, lovely views ..... shame about food & service”

This is a beautiful hotel in quiet surroundings adjacent to its own golf course, with a vineyard to the rear and both an outdoor pool (with views towards Etna) and indoor spa area. "Perfect", you might think. but unfortunately the quality of the food at dinner and the level of service lets the hotel down. Admittedly, we were on a package holiday and so did not sample food served to independent travellers which may have been better, but it is very apparent the staff need further training. On the plus side, the breakfast buffet was excellent.

Also, you should be aware that it is quite a "trek" from the coastal autostrada to the hotel - a long and bendy road which takes in a couple of local towns, not always the easiest to get through at busy times. The trip from the coast will take between 30-40 mins.

“Beautiful hotel”

Having been to Sicily last year I was unsure about returning, but my husband , who is a keen golfer thought that staying at etna golf resort would not be as hectic as Taomina. He was so right. The resort is out of the main touristy area of Taomina but is only a half an hour drive.
The hotel receptionists give every one a warm and proffesional welcome, their English is very good and nothing is too much trouble.
The rooms are very clean and well maintained, the views are a little disappointing some do give a view of Etna and we also had a view of a vineyard, although there was a development of houses being built, but they are a way off and I don't think will spoil the peace and quiet.
We ate in the restaurant a few times and was very surprised how nice the food was, having eaten in hotels in Italy before the food is usually bland, not here. The food is well presented, hot and varied. The maitre'd will translate anything you are unsure of, as his English is excellent. At breakfast there is a large selection of meats, croissants, pastries and warm food. The croissants were fresh and very nice.
If you don't want to eat in the hotel there are restauants and pizzerias dotted around the villages, they are very reasonably priced, much cheaper than Taomina.
We used the swimming pool, it is the coldest pool I have been in, but when the tempretures top 37 degrees it is refreshing. The pool is quite deep and in my opinion not suitable for very young children. The pool attendant worked tirelessly to keep the pool immaculate. There are top quality pool towels available. If there are no sun beds the pool attendant magically will find you one. He does not speak English, so we had great fun practising our Italian.
There is food available round the pool, it is not an extensive menu but adequate, we had delicious toasted sandwiches.
There is an amazing bar lady whose English is great, she is so helpful and works very hard to make sure you feel welcome.
This hotel is a gem hidden away abit off the beaten track , but well worth the effort, you discover the real Sicily.

“Wonderful at the foot of Etna”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2010

Wonderful hotel, excellent and very helpful staff particularly at the reception. Golf course very well maintained, pool is lovely. Rooms are extremely luxurious and so are the bathrooms. Breakfast selection is pretty good. The only problem is the drive to the nearby town to have a bite if you don't want to eat in the hotel restaurant (selection is a bit limited). The hotel is quite close to visit the Etna which is worth the trip. Would certainly go back and recommend to friends (especially golfers)

“High class hotel let down by its own marketing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2009

We had booked an apartment in Taormina for 1 week and wanted to extend our Sicilian holiday a little, so we booked 3 nights at this hotel.
We chose this hotel as it appeared to have plenty to do on site for parents and teenage children. Unfortunately we were disappointed in this respect.
Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely hotel in a quiet, beautiful location with fabulous views of Mt. Etna. The rooms were very comfortable and the fittings and furnishings were top class. The staff were fantastic too, doing everything they could to help. These things combined to make you feel you were staying in a luxury hotel.
Unfortunately, the whole stay was spoilt because not all the services we were expecting were actually available. I obtained a copy of the hotel brochure online before I booked. The same brochure was left in each room. In it there is a picture of a tennis court and the statement "there is a tennis court within the complex". Our guide book also said there was a tennis court at this hotel. There is not, and there never has been a tennis court here. We eneded up doing a 1 hour round trip and paying to use public courts when we played tennis.
The outdoor pool, while lovely, can be a little cold. So we wanted to use the indoor pool, but this is part of the spa which is only open to over 18's. Neither of my children could go in there as a result.
In a hotel of this standard I would expect room service to be available almost round the clock. Indeed, on the bar there is a menu offering a range of snacks available until midnight. It also tells you that lunch is served at the hotel. None of this information is true. When breakfast stops at 10.00, the only food available in the hotel until dinner is served at 20.00 is ham and cheese toasted sandwiches. We hadn't had lunch when we arrived, so we asked if we could get something mid-afternoon on our first day. We were told the golf club served food until 20.00. When we got there, though, they said they stopped serving at 15.00. Another day we asked at reception what time lunch began at the club and were told 12.30. We went to the golf club to be told lunch started at 13.00. If you want to eat outside these times, you need to get in your car.
This inaccurate information and poor communication was what let this hotel down.
We had dinner at the hotel twice and it was very good, as was breakfast and lunch at the golf club.
We didn't use the private beach club. It probably would have taken 40 minutes to get there. You then have to pay €9 per person plus €5 for parking.
Not being a golfer I can't comment on the course. I did use the driving range for €8 plus €2 per 30 balls. It's small, so don't expect to use your driver.

The gym in the spa is reasonably well equipped as long as not too many people use it and the indoor pool looked great.

For a couple wanting a remote, luxury hotel where you can soak up the sun by the outdoor pool, may be use the spa and play a game of golf, then this is a good choice.
But expect to stick to a pretty tight time table for eating and don't take your tennis racquet.
Unless your children are happy with this mix too, families should give it a miss.
