“No Expectations but still failed”

We went to Hotel Giron for a week. We made a last minute booking as it was very cheap. We have been to Cuba now 4 times and this was the worst. As far as the resort goes, the rooms and resort itself were okay. The food was worse than worse. We have had bad food before, but this was the straw that broke the camels back. We are probably spoiled as we have been going to Dominican Republic to 4 stars. We have decided that we will not return to Cuba. To be fair the trip to Caleta Buenna for snorkeling and lunch, is well worth it, the food was much better there. The beer is always cold but they only have it at one bar.

“I've been here twice and absolutely loved it.”

I've been to Playa Giron two different times, once with a buddy for two weeks and we had an absolute great time. Not much too do other than drink, enjoy the sunshine and relax isn't that what a vacation is supposed to be?? Caleta Buena is absolutely gorgeous and is great for snorkelling. We took a day trip into Varadero and enjoyed ourselves also.

Five years later my wife and I returned to Playa Giron and surprisingly the staff remembered me from my previous visit,so I guess I made quite an impression the first time I was there.lol. While visiting this resort you have to remember you are in Cuba and at a 2 star resort.Food was good, drinks were good and I definitely plan on returning.

“some major problems”

My wife and I spent the week on either side of Christmas at this resort. The first impression was pretty good, staff seemed friendly, resort wasn't posh but we weren't expecting that and the room seemed clean and spacious. The food the first half of our stay was poor. They had a very limited selection and the seemed to be reheating the same stuff day after day. The grill at lunch was okay for french fries but the hamburgers and hotdogs they served were poor quality and they were cooked in the same deep fryer they used for the french fries. On some days they ran out of various items.
Later in the week more guests arrived and the menu was more varied but it was never great.
Staff at the resort were either very friendly or extremely grumpy. The ratio was about 25 percent nice.
The beach area in front of the resort was a disappointment. The shore in this area is mostly very sharp coral rocks that are hard to walk on. There's a nice sandy beach beside the resort but it's filled with sand burs that make walking in bare feet dangerous. The snorkeling here was okay, but it still wasn't as nice as many of the other resorts we've been to. There was a free bus to Calenta Beuno which was okay, swimming was a bit nicer there but still nothing to compare to some of the other Cuban resorts we've been to. This excursion was free because the hotel pool was non-functional. They were filling the pool during our stay and when that was done the excursion would have been 3 CUCs and I'm not sure it'd be worth that. Food at the remote location was no better than at the hotel but the staff there was nicer.
There were three major flaws...
1. On one evening the resort ran out of water for about 3 hours. That meant toilets didn't flush and the staff made no effort to come up with a temporary solution, they could easily have scooped buckets of water from the pool to fill the toilets enough to flush.
2. One of the windows in our room didn't have a screen, the mosquitoes didn't seem too bad so we didn't complain but we were being bitten overnight. When we got back home, we did some research on our bites and it seems like the most likely culprit was bed bugs - we hope we didn't get any in our luggage. If you go here and get odd bites during the night that swell badly and itch like crazy, put your luggage in plastic bags when you get off the plane and disinfect everything at home.
3. On one night, we noticed the bar staff ran out of the little plastic cups they serve drinks in. Their solution was to go around to the garbage containers and grab cups from there. We didn't stay to see if they were going to wash them before recycling them, we just called it a night and went back to our room. If you go... take your own cup and don't use anything from the bars.
First impression was good at this resort, but we won't go back.

“The hotel isnt to bad, snorkelling wow...”

We all rent a car to go to Playa Giron who is located at about 3hours from Varadero,
we were going there to go do some snorkelling, and it is a great place, but make sure you bring your water shoes, if you dont want to cut your feet, dont expect see the beach like in Varadero, but it is a great trip to do if you stay in Varadero and feel to go spend one night or two at this hotel. 27.00 per person to stay over night...

the food was ok, but dont forget you are in Cuba...the room not the best, but we didnt really caire, i wouldnt go and stay there for 2 weeks, but for a few nights to enjoy great snorkelling it was perfect. It is a 2** hotel..lol

“It was unsafety”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2010

If you want to go to Playa Giron for your vacation you have to be ready….

1. …to go to swim to others places because the sea at the beach next to the hotel is way to shallow.
They made a wall in the sea to protect the cost from the waves and screwed the view and the depth of the sea. The public beach is not far but it is unsafely and uncomfortable. The waves move all time which leads to constant rock movement and hardens the sea entrance. Also there are a lot of seaweed and sea porcupines that make the access to the sea inconvenient.

2. …to “grab” all stuff in the restaurant the weekend.
A lot of Cubans arrive to Playa Giron on the weekends and the waitresses do not have time to clean up the tables and put clean napkins and/or utencil on the table. You will have to spend a lot of time seeking around the restaurant in order find clean stuff.

3. …to taste the orange juice before pouring it in your glass.
We had orange juice made from rotten oranges twice. The similar thing happened with tomato salad. The cook mixed good and bad tomatoes all together and we could not eat them at all.

4. …to bring the toilet paper.
We didn’t have it in the washroom for 3 days. (On the weekend)

5. …to be cautious.
Do not dry clothe and towels outside the cottage or leave them on the beach. Our beach towel was stolen from the territory of the hotel. Although in spite of the fact that the hotel had guards, a lot of random locals were allowed at the hotel’s territory.

6. …to double or triple check the necessary information with different personnel at the reception or better with their boss.
Two girls from the reception told us the wrong time of the bus departure from the hotel to the airport. They said 7am instead of 6:30am. The driver and the guide did not wait for us, and did not even bother in checking if all the passengers were aboard knowing that they have the list of the leaving tourists. We asked the manager and other personnel for any solution but nobody was willing to help. At the end we left the hotel with other group from Montreal that had the fly two hours later than ours. We were submitted to constant stress while on the road because we were not sure if we make it on time to the airport. Luckily we made it in time. We came to the airport only30 minutes before the plain departure.

Have a good vacation at Playa Giron!
