My wife and I spent the week on either side of Christmas at this resort. The first impression was pretty good, staff seemed friendly, resort wasn't posh but we weren't expecting that and the room seemed clean and spacious. The food the first half of our stay was poor. They had a very limited selection and the seemed to be reheating the same stuff day after day. The grill at lunch was okay for french fries but the hamburgers and hotdogs they served were poor quality and they were cooked in the same deep fryer they used for the french fries. On some days they ran out of various items.
Later in the week more guests arrived and the menu was more varied but it was never great.
Staff at the resort were either very friendly or extremely grumpy. The ratio was about 25 percent nice.
The beach area in front of the resort was a disappointment. The shore in this area is mostly very sharp coral rocks that are hard to walk on. There's a nice sandy beach beside the resort but it's filled with sand burs that make walking in bare feet dangerous. The snorkeling here was okay, but it still wasn't as nice as many of the other resorts we've been to. There was a free bus to Calenta Beuno which was okay, swimming was a bit nicer there but still nothing to compare to some of the other Cuban resorts we've been to. This excursion was free because the hotel pool was non-functional. They were filling the pool during our stay and when that was done the excursion would have been 3 CUCs and I'm not sure it'd be worth that. Food at the remote location was no better than at the hotel but the staff there was nicer.
There were three major flaws...
1. On one evening the resort ran out of water for about 3 hours. That meant toilets didn't flush and the staff made no effort to come up with a temporary solution, they could easily have scooped buckets of water from the pool to fill the toilets enough to flush.
2. One of the windows in our room didn't have a screen, the mosquitoes didn't seem too bad so we didn't complain but we were being bitten overnight. When we got back home, we did some research on our bites and it seems like the most likely culprit was bed bugs - we hope we didn't get any in our luggage. If you go here and get odd bites during the night that swell badly and itch like crazy, put your luggage in plastic bags when you get off the plane and disinfect everything at home.
3. On one night, we noticed the bar staff ran out of the little plastic cups they serve drinks in. Their solution was to go around to the garbage containers and grab cups from there. We didn't stay to see if they were going to wash them before recycling them, we just called it a night and went back to our room. If you go... take your own cup and don't use anything from the bars.
First impression was good at this resort, but we won't go back.
