“Need to try harder!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We didn't stay at the hotel but ate in the Blazing Copper restaurant for my birthday. A wedding party was in another dining area and seemed to be taking most of the wait staff attention. We had a succession of different staff looking after us and service was very slow. My first course - the gluten free soup of the day - arrived with the promised gluten free bread but was barely lukewarm and contained pearl barley. This was exchanged for a delicious seared salmon salad, for which we were not charged. My wife had duck breasts for main course and I had the beef short ribs, both of which were very good. Dessert was also rather hit and miss, my Eton Mess came with blackberries instead of strawberries and ice cream as well as the cream. (It would have had marshmallows, but these were not gluten free!) My wife had chocolate brownie which would have been better served hot, or at least warmed. We had used the courtesy coach to get to the hotel. This coach had seen many better days, the upholstery appeared dirty and there were no seatbelts for the pasengers. On requesting the coach to return us home, we were told several members of staff were off sick and there would be a long wait. In the end, one of the kitchen staff took us home in her own car, which was a very nice gesture, it was just a shame the car was full of junk and had the stereo turned up full! This was the third time in three years that we have eaten at the restaurant and on none of the occasions has the experience been totally satisfying. There are better options in Gore - Casa Bella on the main road and the new Thomas Green bar and restaurant in the middle of town, both of which we would recommend instead.

Hi there,
Thanks for your comments in regards to our Blazing Copper Restaurant. Not sure why they would give you a soup that was not gluten free so sorry about that, but it was nice to hear they fixed the situation with the salmon. We do have gluten free options on the menu which are stated but staff may need educating on certain gluten free ingredients.
The courtesy coach is old and yes has seen better days, as we are always helping out the community we do also lend this coach out to sports clubs i.e., rugby cricket, golf so it does get used all the time, it was nice to hear that a staff member could take you home, it's a nice personal touch rather than make you pay for a taxi which is what you would've had to have done if you had dined at the Thomas Green or Casa Bella.
I do hope you return as we are about to change our menu which is always exciting.

Many thanks

“Too noisy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Spent the night here before a triathlon and was unfortunately awake for most the time.. our room was above the parking lot, which is loose gravel so each time some arrives/leaves, you hear about it. We were also opposite the reception entrance where people seemed to hover/chat etc; this is also the bar's exit...

Quality of sleep's important to me, so we won't be going back.

The breakfast was fine but I'd avoid the coffee..

Staff were great, the building's just been setup in a strange way and just too noisy.

Room Tip: The one furthest away from reception!

Hi There,
Sorry to hear that your stay was not the best, the car park gravel has now been cleaned up so not so noisy, I am surprised to hear the coffee was not great, I will be looking into that as a good coffee in the morning is a must.
Our staff are always friendly as is Gore in general.
I do hope you change your mind and come back.

Kind Regards

“Bouquets and Brickbats....”

Having recently toured the South Island with overseas relatives, we stayed in a different Hotel or Motel every night for two weeks. Having had this experience I feel fairly well qualified to say that The Heartland Hotel Croydon was adequate, but a little highly priced.
In comparison to most of the other places we have stayed (within the last month) this Hotel is at the High end of the pricing range, and mid-range in the quality and comfort category.

On a positive note however, the Reception Staff were very warm, friendly and knowledgeable. It is these first impressions that will keep your guests coming back !

“Find somewhere else!”

This review relates only to the hotel restaurant - we did not stay there. Our party of 4 adults and 2 children were the sole occupants of the rather lifeless and unexciting dining room for most of the visit. Of the 9 courses ordered, only 4 escaped criticism. A "medium" steak was done to death; scallop and bacon kebabs had grey scallops and inedible uncooked bacon. Service was suspicioiusly quick, suggesting that more microwaving than cooking was going on!

Anyone contemplating eating here should walk or drive a few hundred yards towards the town centre and enjoy Casa Bella!
