“Good value for money and excellent restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2011

The rooms are clean and decent, but don't look for anything extra at this price. Beach is just a few hundred meters away. The restaurant is one fo the best in Badacsony with great family atmosphere. The staff is friendly and competent. Take note that it is a very busy area during summer peak season.

“Homely, lovely surroundings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2010

The hotel is in a nice location and a short cycle or walk to local wineries, Lake Balaton and the imposing Badacsony-hegy. Great for outdoor types like us. We had a lovely time in the countryside.

We stayed two nights at this establishment. The first night a noisy party of drunken men arrived back from one of the local cellars at 0200. Not impressed. The second night was fine.

Our small quibbles would be the inconsistency of staff to understand English or German and the attitude of the waiter on our first breakfast morning which was entirely unfriendly.

Otherwise it's a homely place and, has a nice restaurant downstairs.

“Very Nice pension”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2010

I stayed here for 2 nights and really enjoyed it.

The location is very picturesque, however there is not a lot to do in Badacsonytomaj, which is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel. Personally I think that if you are here, theres not a lot to do in the town so you might as well stay somewhere prettier and a little bit further out.

I wouldn't recommend the location for more than a couple of days however, while we really enjoyed the time, it was very much sitting relaxing rather than actually doing anything in particular. Also, the lake is very silty and reedy, not something im used to but people were swimming in it as though it was a gorgeous sea, worth a swim just for the experience though!

The main thing about this hotel that we enjoyed though was the friendly service. We felt so welcome, even though there was a huge language barrier, we never felt like we were causing them trouble. The food in the restaurant was delicious, as was the white wine (much recommended on a hot evening or lunchtime!).

There was one member of staff who spoke perfect English, and another who was reasonable, but it was a bit of an effort. (Just as a warning to brush up on any German (or indeed Hungarian) learnt at school, I'm not someone who expects the world to speak English!)

The room we stayed in was nice and comfortable, a bit of a small bathroom and not many extras.

Breakfast was included in the price for us I think, can't remember paying any more for it anyway!

Overall a very nice hotel in a very pretty part of Hungary, and at a good price.

“Probably not your best bet”

No major problems at the Hotel Borbaratok, but there's just not much to recommend it and there are probably much more pleasant options in the Lake Balaton region.

At $50 a night, the hotel was indeed cheap (as are most pensions on the northern side of the lake). The location was very pretty - in the hills above Lake Balaton (though no views of the lake itself), nestled amongst picturesque vineyards. The furnishings were clean enough, though definitely a bit worse for wear. Neither full size towels nor bath products were provided and the room was not serviced during our two day stay. Breakfast was not included. I should note, in the interest of
fairness, that none of these things were promised. Attitudes amongst the staff varied greatly, though none could be described as highly customer-service oriented.

I wouldn't recommend staying at the Borbaratok without a car, as very little (including the lake) is within convenient walking distance. Most of the staff is fluent in German as well as Hungarian, though none speak English, so it's worth learning a few basic hotel/food requests in German or Hungarian.

I cannot say I had a bad experience at the Hotel Borbaratok, but I
definitely would not stay there again. There isn't very much by way of pensions in Badacsonytomaj, where the Hotel Borbaratok was located. However, the neighboring town of Tihany was incredibly charming and appeared to be a much better bet in terms of accomodation and location in general.
