We were very lucky to find Le Charme Merry and even luckier that there was just one room remaining for the night we wanted to stay, which happened to be the first night of a three week holiday and property search across south-west France. Merry-sur-Yonne is a hamlet close to Auxerre in north-west Burgundy and so makes a perfect stop-over when driving down from the Channel to Languedoc and Provence or back home. It's all in the name: Merry being a post card perfect village at the confluence of river and canal, but equally this stylish maison d'hotes is a very merry place to be given that its hosts Olivia and Nicolas Peron welcome you as if they have known you for many years. Their artisitic and creative lives have enabled them to make this rare find as charming as it is merry. They have developed four generously proportioned bedrooms and en-suites (circa 40M2) that are as stylish as they are comfortable. Olivia and Nicolas have paid great attention to detail to achieve a calm and contemporary mood. No expense has been spared in the quality of stonework, lighting, decor and ensuite, which includes a monumental stone basin, Italian shower and Compagnie de Provence toiletries. There is lovely pool to enjoy in a relaxed garden setting that makes you feel relaxed as soon as you set foot through the door. Be sure to pre-book dinner: aperitifs are served in the shade of the tree and dinner itself is either al fresco in the pretty courtyard or inside beneath chestnut and oak beams, depending on the season. Both Nicolas and Olivia are talented cooks, each with their own specialities. Dinner was delectable - an excellent combination of flavours and textures, with lots of little treats. Better still, wine is included! We were the only British guests that night, the others being smart Parisiens escaping the city for the weekend; hosts and guests alike were convivial and entertaining and the evening passed in a trice. This is wonderful place to stay either to break a longer journey or as a base to discover Burgundy and we shall look forward to staying there whenever we can.
We just came back from France and looking back we remember our stay with Nicolas and Olivia as a highlight of our trip. Nicolas is a designer and a photographer, and he did a marvellous job on the old house. The rooms are beautifully decorated in a wonderful combination of an old farm with modern facilities. But most important is that you get to know your hosts: friendly, warm and gracious people who are willing to share their house and to spend their evenings with you at a delicious dinner that they cook together.
This is the simply the best chambre d´hote in the Yonne region of Burgundy. A stay at Olivia and Nicholas wonderful guest house should not be missed if you are planning to visit this part of France. The rooms are beautifully desgined and Olivia and Nicholas are warm, wonderful and welcoming hosts (speaking good English for those Brits that dont have much French). A pre dinner drink in the evening sunshine in the the charme merry garden is a real pleasure, then there is also the swimming pool and the electric bike....... nice breakfast, comfortable bed and a fun place to stay - go on give it a wirl!
Unfortunately we only stayed one night at Le Charme Merry but we were so impressed by the quality of the place and the charming hosts we look forward to going back there sometime in the not too distant future. We agree with the other reviews (most of them) about the food. It was truly amazing and certainly the best we have ever had at a Table d'Hote bed and breakfast. Everything is home made to a very high quality. The outstanding aspect of this place though is the warmth and generosity of the hosts. They are absolutley delightful. It was on the expensive side for a B & B but in our opinion worth every penny.
